The Wall Street Journal says that Russia sent a cargo ship to Syria to result its military bases.

Russia sent a cargo ship to Syria to resupply its military bases within a step that considered to reflect the attempt of the Kremlin to hold on to its strategic presence in the country, despite the changes in the political rule. This is according to American officials and satellite images obtained by the Wall Street Journal magazine.
According to the sources and the satellite images, the Sparta cargo vessels left the port of St. Petersburg in March before reaching the port of Ṭarṭūs in May, after being accompanied by vessels of the Russian Navy through most of the journey.
The vessel on the Mediterranean was accompanied by a frigate called “Admiral Kasatonov” and a second warship, before continuing to remain in regional waters, while the Sparta entered the Syrian port.
The American officials said that the Sparta was carrying equipment to the Russian Air Base close to Ḥamīmaym, pointing out that the resupply done by the ship was not considered to be a significant escalation, as the relations of the Syrian government with Moscow are known and the military equipment is far from the American interests, especially in the northeast of the country.
The pictures of the Fantore company that is specializing on trade satellite imagery show the ship being towed in St. Petersburg, before embarking around Europe to the Mediterranean.
In this context other pictures taken by the Planet Labs company show the ship in the Syrian port of Ṭarṭūs on 11 May, while also showing support vessels of the Russian Navy in the port.
First supply duty of its kind since the end of 2024
The officials believe that this operation counts to be an indication that Russia continues using its military bases in Syria despite the fall of the government, which causes worries to some American officials, who hoped that the political change a year and a half ago would lead to strategically weakening Russia and expelling it from an important position for its operations in Africa and South America.
This counts to be the first supply mission of its kind since the fall of the government in Syria in late 2024.

صحيفة “وول ستريت جورنال” تقول إنّ روسيا أرسلت سفينة شحن إلى سوريا، لإعادة إمداد قواعدها العسكرية

أرسلت روسيا سفينة شحن إلى سوريا، لإعادة إمداد قواعدها العسكرية، في خطوة اعتُبرت انعكاساً لسعي الكرملين من أجل الحفاظ على وجوده الاستراتيجي في البلاد، رغم التغيّرات السياسية في الحُكم، وذلك وفقاً لمسؤولين أميركيين وصور أقمار اصطناعية اطلعت عليها صحيفة “وول ستريت جورنال”.
وغادرت سفينة الشحن “سبارتا” ميناء سانت بطرسبرغ في آذار/مارس، قبل أن تصل إلى ميناء طرطوس في أيار/مايو، بعد مرافقة من سفن البحرية الروسية طوال معظم الرحلة، بحسب المصادر والصور الفضائية.
ورافقت السفينة في البحر الأبيض المتوسط فرقاطة تُدعى “الأدميرال كاساتونوف”، وسفينة حربية ثانية، قبل أن تواصلا البقاء في المياه الإقليمية أثناء دخول “سبارتا” الميناء السوري
وقال مسؤولون أميركيون إنّ “سبارتا” كانت تحمل معدات لقاعدة جوية روسية قريبة في حميميم، لافتين إلى أنّ مهمة إعادة التموين التي قامت بها السفينة لم تُعتبر تصعيداً لافتاً، لأنّ علاقات الحكومة السورية مع موسكو معروفة، والمعدات العسكرية بعيدة عن المصالح الأميركية، وخاصة في شمال شرق البلاد.
وأظهرت صورة التقطتها شركة “فانتور” المتخصصة في صور الأقمار الاصطناعية التجارية، السفينة وهي تُحمّل في سانت بطرسبرغ قبل انطلاق رحلتها حول أوروبا إلى البحر الأبيض المتوسط.
وفي الإطار، بيّنت صورة أخرى التقطتها شركة “بلانيت لابز” السفينة في ميناء طرطوس السوري في 11 أيار/ مايو، إضافة إلى إظهارها سفن دعم تابعة للبحرية الروسية في الميناء.
أول مهمة إمداد من نوعها منذ أواخر 2024
ويرى مسؤولون أنّ هذه العملية تُعدّ مؤشراً على استمرار روسيا في استخدام قواعدها العسكرية في سوريا رغم سقوط النظام، وهو ما يثير قلق بعض المسؤولين الأميركيين الذين كانوا يأملون أن يؤدي التغيير السياسي قبل نحو عام ونصف العام، إلى إضعاف روسيا استراتيجياً، وحرمانها من محطة مهمة لعملياتها في أفريقيا وأميركا الجنوبية.
وتعدّ هذه أول مهمة إمداد من نوعها منذ سقوط النظام في سوريا، أواخر عام 2024
