The United Nations suspends its humanitarian operations in Niger. That came one day after the military coup the country witnessed against President Muḥammad Bāzūm.
On Thursday spokesman of the U.N. Secretary-General, Steven Dugeric announced that the organization suspends its humanitarian operations in Niger following the military coup.
In a press statement, Dugeric said that “the problem is now connected to the airplanes, meaning that our humanitarian flights cannot let the planes enter the country. That means the suspension of the humanitarian operations”.
On Wednesday military personnel of the army of Niger announced the deposition of the country’s president Muḥammad Bāzūm, the lockdown of the land and areal borders, and the implementation of a curfew.
Earlier on Thursday the army of Niger in a statement announced “support for a group of military personnel deposing president of the county Muḥammad Bāzūm in order to guarantee the physical wellbeing of the president and his family, to prevent a bloody confrontation between the various forces and to preserve the army being in charge”.
The army warned that “any foreign military intervention by any side will have terrible repercussions that cannot be controlled and will lead to chaos in the country”.
On his behalf, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces ‘Abd aṣ-Ṣiddīq ‘Īsā announced that “supporting the announcement” of the putschist military personnel limited the “regime” of President Bāzūm, who was taken into custody by members of the Presidential Guards more than 24 hours ago. Meanwhile, the Military Council accused France of breaching its decision to close the borders.
Meanwhile, a French military plane landed on Thursday in Niger, despite the airspace having been locked down after the announcement of the military coup Wednesday night.
“The President is well”
The Russian news agency cited the Director of the African Union’s Commission Mūsā Faqqī saying that on Thursday he talked with the President of Niger, who said that the soldiers of the Presidential Guards deposed him.
On the margins of the African-Russian Summit held in Saint Petersburg, he said that “he is in relatively good condition, and I even talked with him today. He is “well”.
On Wednesday Faqqī criticized what he said was a coup attempt as it seemed.
In a post on social media posted on Thursday morning, Bāzūm expressed that the democratic forces resist the takeover of power. In a message on the “X” service formerly known as Twitter, he said that “the gains that have been achieved after a long struggle shall be preserved. All the people of Niger love democracy and freedom and shall preserve them”.

Niger, which is not a Sahel country in West Africa counts to be one of the countries most suffering in the world from instability. It has witnessed 4 coups since its independence from France in 1960 in addition to a number of coup attempts. The last of the coups happened on February 2010 deposed President Mamadou Tanja.
The last coup attempt happened two days ago before current president Muḥammad Bāzūm was inaugurated in March 2021.
Bāzūm (aged 63), who is a trusted ally of France, gained 55% of the votes in the second round of the elections that were held in February 2021, against the 44% of the votes gained by his rival t Muḥammad ’Utmān, the candidate of the opposition who previously had ruled the country in the ‘90s.

الأمم المتحدة تعلّق عملياتها الإنسانية في النيجر، وذلك بعد يوم واحد من الانقلاب العسكري الذي شهدته البلاد ضد الرئيس محمد بازوم.
أعلن المتحدث باسم الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة، ستيفان دوغاريك، اليوم الخميس، تعليق المنظمة لعملياتها الإنسانية في النيجر، وذلك في أعقاب الانقلاب العسكري.
وقال دوغاريك، في تصريح صحفي، إنّ “المشكلة تتعلق بالطيران الآن، بمعنى أنّ رحلاتنا الإنسانية لا يمكنها الطيران داخل البلاد، ما يعني تعليق العمليات الإنسانية”.
وأعلن عسكريون في جيش النيجر، أمس الأربعاء، عزل رئيس البلاد، محمد بازوم، وإغلاق الحدود البرية والجوية وفرض حظر التجوال.
وفي وقتٍ سابق اليوم، أعلن جيش النيجر في بيان “دعم إعلان مجموعة من العسكريين الإطاحة برئيس البلاد، محمد بازوم، من أجل الحفاظ على السلامة الجسدية للرئيس وأسرته، وتجنب المواجهة الدامية بين القوات المختلفة والحفاظ على تماسك الجيش
وحذّر الجيش من أن “أي تدخل عسكري خارجي من أي طرف، سيكون له عواقب وخيمة لا يمكن السيطرة عليها، ويؤدي إلى فوضى في البلاد”.
بدوره، أعلن رئيس أركان القوات المسلّحة في النيجر، عبد الصدّيق عيسى، “تأييد إعلان” العسكريين الانقلابيين وضع حدّ “لنظام” الرئيس بازوم الذي يحتجزه أفراد من الحرس الرئاسي منذ أكثر من 24 ساعة، فيما اتهم المجلس العسكري فرنسا بانتهاك قراره بإغلاق الحدود.
هذا وهبطت طائرة عسكرية فرنسية، اليوم الخميس، في النيجر رغم إغلاق المجال الجوي، بعد الإعلان عن انقلاب عسكري، الليلة الماضية.
“الرئيس بخير“
ذكرت وكالة الإعلام الروسية نقلاً عن رئيس مفوضية الاتحاد الأفريقي، موسى فقي، قوله إنّه تحدث اليوم الخميس إلى رئيس النيجر، الذي قال جنود من الحرس الرئاسي إنّهم أطاحوا به.
وقال على هامش القمة الروسية – الأفريقية التي تنعقد في سان بطرسبرغ “إنّه في وضع جيد للغاية. بل إنني تحدثت معه اليوم. إنه بخير”.

وحثّ بازوم، في منشور على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي، صباح اليوم الخميس، القوى الديمقراطية على مقاومة الاستيلاء على السلطة. وقال في رسالة عبر خدمة “إكس” المعروفة سابقاً بـ”تويتر”، “ستُصان المكتسبات التي حققت بعد كفاح طويل. كل أبناء النيجر المحبين للديموقراطية والحرية سيحرصون على ذلك
وتُعدُّ النيجر، وهي دولة غير ساحلية في غرب أفريقيا، من أكثر البلدان التي تعاني انعدام الاستقرار في العالم، وهي شهدت 4 انقلابات منذ الاستقلال عن فرنسا في عام 1960، إضافةً إلى العديد من محاولات الانقلاب. وكان آخر الانقلابات في شباط/فبراير 2010 الذي أطاح بالرئيس مامادو تانجا.
وكانت آخر محاولة انقلاب، قبل يومين من حفل تنصيب الرئيس الحالي، محمد بازوم، في آذار/مارس من العام 2021.
وفاز بازوم (63 عاماً)، وهو حليف وثيق لفرنسا، بحصوله على 55% من الأصوات في الشوط الثاني من الانتخابات، التي نظمت في شباط/فبراير 2021، مقابل 44% من الأصوات حصل عليها خصمه، محمد عثمان، مرشح المعارضة، الذي سبق أن حكم البلاد في تسعينيات القرن الماضي
