Satellite pictures evaluated by the American Associated Press agency show what looks to be a new runway for planes being set up at the entrance of the Red Sea. But what is the role of the Emirates?

While the Yemeni supporting Gaza continues to be effective, satellite pictures evaluated by the American Associated Press agency show what seems to be a new runways being built at one of the islands of Socotra (being occupied by the Emirates) close to the Gulf of Aden at the entrance of the Bāb al-Mandib, a vital maritime route on the Red Sea.
No state officially announced the construction works on the ‘Abd al-Kūrī Island, which is a patch of land in the Indian Ocean close to the end of the Gulf of Aden. Despite this, the American agency says it seems that the satellite pictures show the workers wrote slogans supporting the Emirates next to the runway.
The reports connect this to the presence of the Emirati forces in the Socotra archipelago (the ‘Abd al-Kūry Island is part of it) along the Emirati supported so called “Southern Transitional Council Forces”.
In response to the questions of the Associated Press agency the Emirate did not deny, nor confirm what is being circulated about the runway, yet it claimed that its presence in the Island of Socotra is “legal” and it is coordination with the Saudi appointed government.
The length of the ‘Abd al-Kūry Island reaches 35 kilometers and its width is around 5 kilometers. At the point of its greatest width this runway is being built.
According to the reports the Planet Lance satellite pictures obtained by the Associated Press show installations on various points and activities there. This includes the flattening of the area, where the runway’s length from north to south reaches some 3 kilometers. With such a length the runway can service attack, patrol and transport planes and even some of the heaviest bombers.
According to the pictures of the Planet Lance the evaluation of the pictures show the preliminary idea of the construction works in January 2022, when the shortest runway was dug. The first signs of the longer runway being built from the north to the south is shown in July 2022, but the work on the site eventually stopped.
The ‘Abd al-Kūry airport is not the first suspicious runway being built in the midst of the aggression against Yemen. In 2021 the Associated Press agency mentioned that an airport had been constructed on the Island of Mayūn.
After that military officials of the government supported by the Saudi Coalition against Yemen said that the Emirates is building a runway.
This report comes at a time escalation, when the Red Sea witnesses American attempts to affect the Yemeni operations and its deterrence on the passageways in light of their negative impact on the security of “Israel”.
Sana’a has confirmed a number of times that it guarantees the maritime travel and that its operations only target the Israeli ships and those heading to ports of the Occupation, until the aggression and the blockade against the Gaza Strip is not lifted and aid is not supplied there.

مع استمرار جبهة اليمن الداعمة لغزة والمؤثرة، تُظهر صور الأقمار الصناعية التي حللتها. وكالة “أسوشييتد برس” الأميركية ما يبدو أنه مهبط طائرات جديد يتم بناؤه في إحدى جزر. سقطرى اليمنية (تحتلها الإمارات)، قرب خليج. عدن عند مدخل باب المندب، الممر البحري الحيوي في البحر الأحمر.
ولم تعلن أي دولة علناً أنّ أعمال البناء تجري في جزيرة عبد الكوري، وهي منطقة من الأرض. ترتفع من المحيط الهندي بالقرب من مصب خليج عدن. ومع ذلك، يبدو أنّ صور الأقمار الصناعية تُظهر أنّ العمال كتبوا عبارات داعمة للإمارات بجوار المدرج، تقول الوكالة الأميركية.
وتربط التقارير بين وجود قوات إماراتية في سلسلة جزر سقطرى (جزيرة عبد الكوري جزء. منها)، بجانب ما يسمى “قوات المجلس الانتقالي الجنوبي” المدعوم إماراتياً.
ورداً على أسئلة وكالة “أسوشييتد برس”، لم تنفِ الإمارات أو تؤكد ما يجري تداوله بشأن مهبط. الطائرات، لا بل زعمت أنّ وجودها في جزيرة سقطرى “شرعي”، وبالتعاون مع الحكومة المعيّنة سعودياً.
ويبلغ طول جزيرة عبد الكوري نحو 35 كيلومتراً، وعرضها في أوسع نقطة نحو 5 كيلومترات. وعلى طول تلك النقطة الأوسع، يجري بناء مهبط للطائرات.
ووفق التقرير، أظهرت صور الأقمار الاصطناعية من “بلانيت لابز” التي حللتها. “أسوشييتد برس”، مركبات في مواقع مختلفة وأنشطة تجري هناك، منها رصف الموقع، حيث يبلغ طول المدرج الممتد من. الشمال إلى الجنوب نحو 3 كيلومترات. ويمكن لمدرج بهذا الطول أن يستوعب طائرات هجوم ومراقبة ونقل، وحتى بعض أثقل القاذفات.
وتشير تحليلات الصور إلى رؤية أعمال البناء مبدئياً في المنطقة. في يناير/ كانون الثاني 2022، مع حفر مدرج أقصر، وفقاً لصور “بلانيت لابز”. وظهرت أولى علامات بناء المدرج الأطول من الشمال إلى الجنوب في يوليو/ تموز 2022، لكن العمل في الموقع توقف لاحقاً.
مطار عبد الكوري ليس أول مهبط طائرات غامض يبدأ تشييده وسط العدوان على اليمن. ففي عام 2021، ذكرت وكالة “أسوشييتد برس” أنه تم بناء مطار في جزيرة ميون.
بعد ذلك، قال مسؤولون عسكريون في الحكومة المدعومة من التحالف السعودية ضد اليمن، إنّ الإمارات تقوم ببناء المدرج.
ويأتي هذا التقرير في ظل التوترات التي يشهدها البحر الأحمر والمحاولات الأميركية. للتأثير على العمليات اليمنية وردعها بشتى الطرق، نظراً لتأثيراتها السلبية على أمن “إسرائيل”.
وأكدت صنعاء أكثر من مرة ضمانها أمن الملاحة البحرية وأنّ عملياتها تستهدف فقط السفن. الإسرائيلية وتلك المتوجهة إلى موانئ الاحتلال، حتى رفع العدوان والحصار عن قطاع غزّة، وإدخال المساعدات له
