The matter of Syria’s return to the League of Arab States is once again discussed. Military advisor to the Arab League’s Secretary Maḥmūd Halīfa believes that its return to the League will be close.
Military advisor to the Arab League’s Secretary General Maḥmūd Halīfa confirmed that Syria’s return to the League “will be close”.
According to some statements by the “Sputnik” news agency today, on Monday, Halīfa said that “there are thoughts, which were put forward for the return of Syria”. Thus confirming that it will be “very close”.
He pointed out that “the seat of Syria in the League of Arab States was not erased, only suspended until certain conditions will be available within Syria and within the Arab framework”. Thus wishing “that Syria to be stabile and increase its power to be present among its Arab brothers”.
The matter of returning Syria’s seat in the League of Arab States started to be put forward in the joint Arab meetings for some time, after the League suspended its membership in 2011.
The conditions now witness an Arab openness towards Syria, especially after the Abū Zabī reopened its embassy in Damascus in 2018.
It should be mentioned that Syrian Foreign Minister Fayṣal Al-Miqdād said in the beginning of October 2011 that the decision of his country’s withdrawal from the Arab League “was not by Arab consensus”, and that there are conditions, which led some to take take this decision to exclude it from there.

ملف عودة سوريا إلى جامعة الدول العربية يُناقَش مجدَّداً، والمستشار العسكري للأمين العام لجامعة الدول العربية، محمود خليفة، يرى أن عودتها إليها ستكون قريبة
أكّد المستشار العسكري للأمين العام لجامعة الدول العربية، محمود خليفة، أن عودة سوريا إلى مقعدها في الجامعة “ستكون قريبة”.
وبحسب تصريحات لوكالة “سبوتنيك”، اليوم الإثنين، قال خليفة إن “هناك أفكاراً تمّ طرحها من أجل عودة سوريا”، مؤكّداً أنها ستكون “قريبة جداً”.
وأشار إلى أن “مقعد سوريا في جامعة الدول العربية لم يُلغَ، بل هو مجمد إلى حين توافر ظروف معينة داخل سوريا وضمن الإطار العربي”، متمنياً “أن تستقر سوريا وتزداد قوة بوجودها بين الأشقاء العرب”.
وكان موضوع عودة سوريا إلى مقعدها في الجامعة العربية بدأ يُطرح في الاجتماعات العربية المشتركة منذ فترة، بعد أن علّقت الجامعة عضويتها عام 2011.
وتشهد الأجواء الآن انفتاحاً عربياً تجاه سوريا، وخصوصاً بعد أن أعادت أبو ظبي فتح سفارتها في دمشق عام 2018.
