An Iranian source to al-Mayadeen denies that Tehran would have been involved in the Erbil incident calling it a “false flag”.

A high level Iranian source told al-Mayadeen that the incident that took place on Monday in Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan Region represents yet another example of a “false flag” operation.
The source confirmed that Iran had no connection to the incident, underlining that the Iranian operations “are announced officially and candidly”.
It added that “all those who respect the sovereignty of Iran has the respect of Iran”.
Earlier on Monday two drones had targeted the office of Head of Government of Kurdistan Region Masrūr Bārazānī in Erbil. The security agency of the region claimed that the two drones came from Iranian territories, though no human losses were reported.
This incident comes in the context of repeated attacks against Erbil and its surroundings. On 12 August security sources of Reuters had reported that 4 drones targeted 3 Iranian Kurdish opposition military camps close to Erbil.
The frame “false flag” indicates an operation that is carried out in a way that appears to make another side responsible for it with the aim to shift the responsibility, or to create pretexts for political, or military measures to be taken against it.
Within a known “Operation Suzanne” operation the Israeli military intelligence had carried out a secret operation in Egypt, during which it recruited Egyptian Jews to plant bombs at Egyptian, British and American civilian installations with the plan to put the blame on Egyptian groups. The goal was to create an atmosphere of confusion and have an impact on British decisions about their presence at the Suez Canal region. The operation was revealed and failed and became knows later on as the “Lavon Affair”.

قال المصدر الإيراني الرفيع للميادين إن الحادثة التي وقعت اليوم في أربيل بإقليم كردستان العراق تمثل مثالاً آخر على عملية “العلم الزائف”.
وأكد المصدر عدم وجود أي علاقة لإيران بالحادثة، مشدداً على أن العمليات الإيرانية “يُعلن عنها رسمياً وبصراحة”.
وأضاف أن “كل من يحترم سيادة إيران يحظى باحترام إيران
وفي وقتٍ سابق اليوم، استهدفت مسيّرتان مكتب رئيس حكومة إقليم كردستان مسرور بارزاني في أربيل، وزعمت وكالة الأمن في الإقليم أن المسيّرتين انطلقتا من الأراضي الإيرانية، ولم تُسجّل خسائر بشرية.
تأتي الحادثة في سياق هجمات متكررة على أربيل ومحيطها، ففي 12 آب/أغسطس، أفادت مصادر أمنية لـ”رويترز” بأن 4 مسيّرات استهدفت 3 معسكرات للمعارضة الكردية الإيرانية قرب أربيل
ويشير مصطلح “العَلَم الزائف” إلى عملية تُنفَّذ بطريقة توحي بأن جهةً أخرى هي المسؤولة عنها، بهدف تحميلها المسؤولية أو خلق مبررات لاتخاذ إجراءات سياسية أو عسكرية ضدها.
