The final statement of the Arab League welcomes Syria to regain its seat in the League and gives priority to reaching a comprehensive political solution to the Syrian crisis preserving the sovereignty and unity of Syria.
The Council of the Arab League in its final statement issued on Sunday confirms the reinstated participation of the delegation of the Syrian government in its summits. That is 12 years after its membership was suspended.
The statement announced that it was decided to “reinstate the participation of the delegation of the government of the Syrian Arab Republic on the meetings of the Arab League Council and also in all the organizations and institutions belonging to it”. Thus explaining that the decision is valid from 17 May.
The announcement by the Arab League Council came ten days before the Arab League Summit to be held in Saudi Arabia on 19 May and it is not known yet whether Syrian President Baššār al-Asad would participate.
The Arab League statement called for continued direct dialogue with the Syrian government to reach a comprehensive solution solving all implications of the Syrian crisis.
The statement pointed out the need to take operative and actual steps to move towards the solution of the crisis, clarifying that comes within the principle of “step for step”.
The final statement once again reiterated the commitment to preserve the sovereignty, territorial integrity, stability, and regional integrity of Syria, welcoming Damascus and regaining cooperation with the Arab states to implement the Arab League resolutions in this concern.
The statement states founding a ministerial contact committee made up of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, and Egypt to follow up on the implementation of the most recent Amman Conciliatory Summit that was held to study the ways of ending the sufferings of the Syrian people and permanently solving the crisis at the beginning of May.
Last Monday Jordan hosted a meeting on the level of the foreign ministers by Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. During that, they agreed that ending the Syrian crisis is a priority with all the suffering it caused for the Syrian people.
On Sunday summit of the Arab foreign ministers met confirming “the dedication to promote the role of the Arab leaders for the efforts about the Syrian crisis and all its implications, thus involving the crises of the refugees, the drug smuggling and the terrorist threat”.
The ministers meeting at their extraordinary summit officially agreed to reinstate Syria’s seat in the Arab League.
Official spokesman of the Arab League’s Secretary General Ğamāl Rušdī had already pointed out earlier on Sunday that “it is expected that the Arab foreign ministers today will agree on reinstating Syria’s seat in the Arab League”.
Arab League Secretary-General Aḥmad Abū l-Ġayṭ stated that the Syrian President can participate in the Arab League Summit that is about to be held this month in case he wishes to do so.
The statement by Abū l-Ġayṭ came as a response to a question about the possibility whether al-Asad can participate in the summit that is scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia and Abū l-Ġayṭ said in the press conference in Cairo: “If he wishes. Starting from tonight Syria is a full member of the Arab League and from tomorrow morning it has to right to work together in any meeting conveyed”.
Previously the Secretary General of the Arab League had said that Syria’s return to its seat in the Arab League “must take place in phases”.

البيان الختامي لجامعة الدول العربية يرحب باستعادة سوريا لمقعدها في الجامعة، ويعطي الأولوية للوصول إلى حلٍ سياسي شامل للأزمة السورية، يحفظ سيادة سوريا ووحدتها
أكّد مجلس جامعة الدول العربية في البيان الختامي الصادر عنه، اليوم الأحد، استئناف مشاركة وفود الحكومة السورية في اجتماعاته، وذلك بعد 12 عاماً على تعليق عضويتها
وأعلن البيان أنّه تقرر “استئناف مشاركة وفود حكومة الجمهورية العربية السورية في اجتماعات مجلس جامعة الدول العربية، وجميع المنظمات والأجهزة التابعة لها”، موضحاً أنّ القرار يسري العمل به اعتباراً من 7 أيار/مايو الجاري
ويأتي إعلان مجلس جامعة الدول العربية قبل عشرة أيام من قمةٍ عربيةٍ تُعقد في السعودية، في 19 أيار/مايو الجاري، وليس معروفاً بعد ما إذا كان الرئيس السوري، بشار الأسد، سيشارك في حضورها
ودعا بيان الجامعة العربية إلى الاستمرار في الحوار المباشر مع الحكومة السورية، للتوصل إلى حلٍّ شاملٍ يعالج جميع تبعات الأزمة السورية
وأشار البيان إلى ضرورة اتخاذ خطوات عملية وفاعلة للتدرج نحو حل الأزمة، موضحاً أنّ ذلك يتم وفق مبدأ “الخطوة مقابل الخطوة
وجدّد البيان الختامي الالتزام بالحفاظ على سيادة سوريا ووحدة أراضيها واستقرارها وسلامتها الإقليمية، مُرحباً باستعداد دمشق للتعاون مع الدول العربية لتطبيق مخرجات البيانات العربية ذات الصلة
ونصّ البيان على تأليف لجنة اتصال وزارية تتكون من الأردن والسعودية والعراق ولبنان ومصر، وذلك لمتابعة تنفيذ بيان اجتماع عمّان التشاوري الأخير، والذي انعقد لبحث سبل إنهاء معاناة الشعب السوري وحل الأزمة بشكل نهائي، في مطلع أيار/مايو الجاري
واستضاف الأردن، الإثنين الماضي، اجتماعاً لوزراء خارجية كلٍ من سوريا والأردن والسعودية ومصر، تمّ الاتفاق خلاله على أولوية إنهاء الأزمة السورية وكل ما سببته من معاناة للشعب السوري
واجتمع وزراء الخارجية العرب، اليوم الأحد، في القاهرة، مؤكدين “الحرص على إطلاق دور عربي قيادي في جهود الأزمة السورية وانعكاساتها، ومن ضمنها أزمات اللجوء وتهريب المخدرات وخطر الإرهاب
ووافق الوزراء في اجتماعهم الاستثنائي، بشكلٍ رسمي على استعادة سوريا مقعدها الشاغر في جامعة الدول العربية
وكان المتحدث الرسمي باسم الأمين العام لجامعة الدول العربية، جمال رشدي، قد أشار في وقت سابقٍ اليوم، إلى أنّه “من المتوقع أن يوافق وزراء الخارجية العرب اليوم على استعادة سوريا مقعدها في الجامعة العربية
وصرّح الأمين العام لجامعة الدول العربية، أحمد أبو الغيط، أنّ الرئيس السوري يمكنه المشاركة في قمة الجامعة التي ستنعقد هذا الشهر، في حال رغب ذلك
وجاء تصريح أبو الغيط رداً على سؤال حول إمكانية مشاركة الأسد في القمة المقرر عقدها في السعودية، حيث قال أبو الغيط في مؤتمر صحفي في القاهرة، “إذا ما رغب، سوريا ابتداءً من مساء اليوم هي عضو كامل العضوية في الجامعة العربية، ومن صباح الغد لهم الحق في شغل أي مقعد يشاركون فيه
