The Iranian Consultative Council approves erasing 4 zeros from the national currency keeping its name “rial”, while the new currency unit equal to 10 thousand rial of the current currency.

According to what the local media has reported, on Sunday the Iranian Consultative Council approves the decision to erase 4 zeros of the national currency.
Talking to the official television President of the Economic Committee of the Council Šams ad-Dīn Ḥosseynī pointed out “the Islamic Consultative Council in its session today approved the decision of erasing 4 zeros from the national currency and keep its name (rial), instead of changing its name to tōmān”.
Ḥosseynī also explained that “the 12th government had presented a draft to modify the first paragraph of the Currency and Bank Act, but after adopting the new Central Bank Act in 2023 some stipulations of the former law were erased”.
Ḥosseynī pointed out that “the governmental plan and the previous parliament decision included erasing 4 zeros of the currency, so a singe unit of the new currency will be equal to 10 thousand rial of the present currency. This is the process the Economic Committee of the Parliament has approved”.
The President of the Economic Committee of the Islamic Consultative Council also added that “the simple modification of the currency unit was kept”, adding that “the exchange rate of the new rial against the foreign currency was outlined, and also the selling and buying processes that are made by the Central Bank. The present financial order will be kept along with the overseeing of the country’s reserves and its legal obligations”.
He confirmed that “the law about the membership of Iran in the International Monetary Fund is still binding and covers its obligations”.
The suggestion to erase some zeros was put forward in 2016 for the first time, and later on was reviewed after the economic changes seen in the country following the United States’ withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018 and reinstalled sanctions.

صادق مجلس الشورى الإيراني، اليوم الأحد، على قرار حذف 4 أصفار. من العملة الوطنية، وفق ما أفادت به وسائل إعلام محلية.
وأشار رئيس اللجنة الاقتصادية في المجلس، شمس الدين حسيني، في. حديث للتلفزيون الرسمي، إلى أن “مجلس الشورى الإسلامي صادق في جلسته اليوم على قرار حذف 4 أصفار من. العملة الوطنية، والإبقاء على اسمها (الريال)، عوضاً عن تبديل الاسم إلى التومان”.
كما أوضح حسيني، أنّ “الحكومة الـ12 كانت قد قدّمت مشروع تعديل. المادة الأولى، من قانون النقد والبنوك، لكن بعد إقرار قانون البنك المركزي الجديد عام 2023، أُلغيت بعض مواد القانون السابق”.
ولفت حسيني إلى أنّ “مشروع الحكومة وقرار البرلمان السابق، تضمّنا حذف. 4 أصفار من العملة، بحيث تُصبح الوحدة النقدية الجديدة تعادل 10 آلاف ريال من العملة الحالية، وهو النهج الذي وافقت عليه اللجنة الاقتصادية في البرلمان”.
كذلك، أضاف رئيس اللجنة الاقتصادية في مجلس الشورى. الإيراني، أنه “تمّ الحفاظ على التعديلات البسيطة في. الوحدة النقدية”، مضيفاً أنّ “تحديد سعر صرف العملات الأجنبية مقابل. الريال الجديد، وعمليات الشراء والبيع التي يجريها البنك المركزي، ستتمّ ضمن النظام المالي القائم مع مراعاة احتياطيات البلاد والتزاماتها القانونية”.
وأكد أنّ “قانون عضوية إيران في صندوق. النقد الدولي، لا يزال سارياً ويغطي هذه الالتزامات”.
وكان مقترح حذف الأصفار قد طُرح للمرة الأولى عام 2016، ثم أُعيد. النظر فيه بعد التقلّبات الاقتصادية التي شهدتها البلاد، عقب انسحاب الولايات المتحدة من الاتفاق النووي عام 2018، وعودة العقوبات
