The decision comes in the context of international support for the Moroccan sovereignty over the

Sahara, as King of Bahrain last Friday expressed “that he welcomes the recognition by the United States for the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over the region of the Sahara”. Also its decision to “open an American consulate in the city of ad-Dahila”. Thus confirming that “a historically important step strengthening the territorial sovereignty and the Moroccan rights in the Moroccan Sahara”.

The Bahraini News Agency reported that King Ḥamad ibn ‘Īsā Āl Halīfa confirmed in a telephone conversation with the Moroccan monarch on 26 November the support of the kingdom and its solidarity “with the Kingdom of Morocco in defending its sovereignty and its rights of the framework of the Moroccan sovereignty and Moroccan territorial integrity”.

Jordanian King ‘Abd Allah II. announced a similar decision on 20 November, while the state of the United Arab Emirates was the first Arab state to open a diplomatic representation in the Sahara at the end of November.

The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the Republic of Haiti decided to open a consulate in ad-Dāhila south of al-‘Ayūn. Until now some 16 African states have opened consulates in the Moroccan Sahara. Thus Rabat gained support for its position after it rejoined the African Union in 2017.
