Spain and Morocco agreed to reopen their land borders at the two enclaves Ceuta and Melilla in the north of the kingdom after being closed down for two years.
According to what Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares announced Spain and Morocco agreed to reopen their land borders at the two enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in the north of the kingdom within the next few days after being closed down for two years.
Albares, who took part in the summit of the International Coalition Combating Dā‘iš in Marrakech said: We have reached a final agreement to reopen the land borders at Ceuta and Melilla within the next few days”, without revealing the agreed date.
He added: “The decision was taken, but there is an operational side to it”, which has to be dealt with.
These land borders crossings were closed down for two years because of the Corona crisis, but they stayed closed after that as part of a fierce diplomatic crisis between Rabat and Madrid, before the two countries announced at the beginning of April a roadmap to step over this.
According to what the official Spanish newspaper published, the Spanish Interior Ministry announced the reopening of these border crossings on 30 April before the lockdown was prolonged for an additional 15 days.
It is expected that Madrid and Rabat con tied their political discussions about drafting the sea boundaries along Western Sahara in the next few days.
The Spanish “Eldiario” website said that after 15 years of not sitting down to talk the delegations of the two countries will meet this week to discuss the matter of the regional sea boundaries between the two countries. Thus pointing out that the two sides have full readiness to chart their sea boundaries in the presence of the government representatives of the Canary Islands.

إسبانيا والمغرب تتفقان على إعادة فتح حدودهما البرية في جيبي سبتة ومليلية شمال المملكة، بعد إغلاق دم لمدة عامين
اتفقت إسبانيا والمغرب على إعادة فتح حدودهما البرية في جيبي سبتة ومليلية شمال المملكة، خلال الأيام المقبلة، وذلك بعدما ظلت مغلقة لعامين، وفق ما أعلن وزير الخارجية الإسباني خوسيه مانويل الباريس
وقال الباريس، الذي كان مشاركاً في اجتماع التحالف الدولي لمناهضة تنظيم داعش، في مراكش: “توصلنا إلى اتفاق نهائي لإعادة فتح الحدود البرية مع سبتة ومليلية خلال الأيام المقبلة”، من دون الإعلان عن الموعد المتفق عليه.
وأضاف: “اتخذ القرار، لكن هناك جوانب عملية” يتعيّن حلها.
وكانت هذه المعابر الحدودية أغلقت قبل عامين بسبب جائحة كورونا، لكنها ظلت مغلقة بعد ذلك في سياق أزمة دبلوماسية حادة بين الرباط ومدريد، قبل أن يعلن البلدان مطلع نيسان/أبريل عن خريطة طريق لطيّ هذه الصفحة.
وأعلن وزير الداخلية الإسباني أن إعادة فتح تلك المعابر ستتم في الـ 30 من نيسان/ أبريل، قبل أن يُمدّد الإغلاق لمدة 15 يوماً إضافية، بحسب ما نشر في الصحيفة الرسمية الإسبانية.
ومن المرتقب أن تستأنف مدريد والرباط مفاوضاتهما السياسية بخصوص ترسيم الحدود البحرية قبالة الصحراء خلال الأيام المقبلة.
وقال موقع “eldiario” الإسباني إنه بعد 15 عاماً من عدم الجلوس للحديث، سيلتقي وفدا البلدين هذا الأسبوع لمناقشة مسألة حدود المياه الإقليمية بين البلدين، مشيراً إلى أن الجانبين لديهما الاستعداد الكامل لترسيم الحدود البحرية، بحضور ممثلين عن حكومة جزر الكناري
