As a protest to the position of the Spanish government about the matter of Western Sahara Algeria summons its ambassador at Madrid, Sa‘īd Mūsā for consultations.
Algeria announced in Saturday that it summoned its ambassador in Madrid, Sa‘īd Mūsā in protest for what it deemed as “a surprising twist” in the Spanish government’s position about the Sahara case.
The statement of the Foreign Ministry said: “The Algerian authorities are gravely surprised by the latest statements of the highest Spanish authorities about the case of Western Sahara”.
It added: “We are surprised by this sudden twist and transformation compared to the position of the previous administration about Western Sahara”.
According to a statement issued by the Moroccan Royal Court, on Friday the Spanish government in a message sent by its Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to the Moroccan monarch VI. Muḥammad described the local autonomy in the Sahara as “the most serious one” for a solution in the disputed region.
This counts as “a historic transformation” in the position of Madrid about this matter, considering its is the former colonizer of the region, not forgetting so far held a neutral position in the past.
Since 1975 there is a struggle between Morocco and the Polisario Front about the Sahara region, which started after the Spanish occupation ended its presence in the area.
The struggle then transformed into an armed conflict that lasted until 1991, which ended with signing a ceasefire agreement under U.N. auspices.
Rabat is adamant about its right for the Sahara region and proposed an extended autonomy under its sovereignty, while the Polisario demands a referendum of self determination. This is the proposition, which Algeria supports as well, which hosts the refugees from the disputed region.

الجزائر تستدعي سفيرها في إسبانيا جراء موقف مدريد من ملف الصحراء الغربية

احتجاجاً على موقف الحكومة الإسبانية إزاء ملف الصحراء الغربية، الجزائر تستدعي سفيرها لدى مدريد سعيد موسي للتشاور.
أعلنت الجزائر، اليوم السبت، استدعاء سفيرها لدى مدريد، سعيد موسي، احتجاجاً على ما اعتبرته “الانقلاب المفاجئ” في موقف الحكومة الإسبانية إزاء ملف الصحراء.
وقال بيان لوزارة الخارجية: “تفاجأت السلطات الجزائرية بشدة، من التصريحات الأخيرة للسلطات العليا الإسبانية بشأن ملف الصحراء الغربية”.
وأضاف: “نستغرب الانقلاب المفاجئ والتحوّل في موقف السلطة الإدارية السابقة في الصحراء الغربية”.
ووصفت الحكومة الإسبانية، يوم الجمعة، في رسالة بعثها رئيسها بيدرو سانشيز إلى العاهل المغربي محمد السادس، مبادرة الحكم الذاتي المغربية في الصحراء بـ”الأكثر جدية” للتسوية في الإقليم المتنازع عليه، بحسب بيان للديوان الملكي المغربي.
ويعدُّ هذا “تحولاً تاريخياً” في موقف مدريد من القضية، باعتبارها المستعمر السابق للإقليم، لا سيما وأنّها كانت تتبنى موقفاً محايداً في السابق.
ومنذ 1975، هناك نزاع بين المغرب وجبهة “البوليساريو” حول إقليم الصحراء، بدأ بعد إنهاء الاحتلال الإسباني وجوده في المنطقة.
وتحوّل الصراع إلى مواجهة مسلحة استمرت حتى 1991، وتوقفت بتوقيع اتفاق لوقف إطلاق النار، برعاية الأمم المتحدة.
وتصر الرباط على أحقيتها في إقليم الصحراء، وتقترح حكماً ذاتياً موسعاً تحت سيادتها، فيما تطالب “البوليساريو” باستفتاء لتقرير مصير الإقليم، وهو طرح تدعمه الجزائر التي تستضيف لاجئين من الإقليم المتنازع عليه
