The kingdom’s former ambassador to Cairo Aḥmad Qaṭṭān says that Aḥmad Šafīq was the won who won the elections in 2012, but the American ambassador changed the events so Muḥammad Mursī could win.
Saudi State Minister for African Matters Aḥmad Qaṭṭān in a televised interview two days ago suggested that the 2012 elections in Egypt was a charade and Lieutenant General Aḥmad Šafīq was the one who won against Muḥammad Mursī, and he officially reported that.
In a remarkable statement, Qaṭṭān said that the results of the elections were changed because of the American ambassador in Cairo at that time Ann Parson, this confirming her role in what happened.
In his explanation about what happened, he said that the Egyptian television announced the victory of Aḥmad Šafīq and attributed to the Egyptian journalist Muṣṭafā Bakrī announced that the security forces moved to the residence of Aḥmad Šafīq to protect him.
Qaṭṭān also revealed what he was doing as the ambassador of the kingdom in Egypt at that time. That he sent a report to the Saudi Foreign Minister at that time Sa‘ūd al-Fayṣal saying in it: “Thank God Muḥammad Mursī was the one, who won in the elections, because Egypt was on fire, as the Muslim Brotherhood took control over the Egyptian streets, run the climate and they have become in control of all small and big. So I praised God that he won, and I added that their deeds will be scandalous during this year”. Thus pointing out that his predictions at that time were practical that these “will not rule Egypt”.
It should be remembered that Aḥmad Šafīq lost the presidential elections held in 2012 against Muḥammad Mursī, who belonged to the Muslim Brotherhood. This was the first election, which Egypt witnessed after the 2011 uprising, which toppled former President Ḥusnī Mubārak.

Qaṭṭān was also saying what happened in a meeting held in Riyadh, in which were present the late Foreign Minister Sa‘ūd al-Fayṣal in addition to the kingdom’s ambassador to Washington ‘Ādil al-Ğubayr, Saudi Arabia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Nizār Madanī, Qaṭṭān himself, and also American State Secretary at that time Hillary Clinton.
He recounted that Sa‘ūd al-Fayṣal introduced him to Clinton and asked him to give her an idea about his predictions. So he told her that: “the Egyptian armed forces will not allow the Muslim Brotherhood to rule Egypt”.
Some experts view reflections in the Saudi announcements on the strained relations between the Saudi Crown Prince and his allies, especially the Egyptian President ‘Abd al-Fattāḥ as-Sīsī, ad especially after the Americans revealed an intelligence report, which accused Ibn Salmān to be behind the murder of the Saudi journalist Ğamāl Hāšuqğī.

تطرق أحمد قطان، وزير الدولة السعودي لشؤون الدول الإفريقية خلال مقابلة تلفزيونية قبل يومين إلى انتخابات عام 2012 في مصر، مصرحاً بأن الفريق أحمد شفيق هو من فاز بها أمام محمد مرسي، وأنه أبلغ رسمياً بذلك
وفي تصريح لافت، قال قطان إن نتيجة الانتخابات قُلبت بسبب تدخل السفيرة الأميركية في القاهرة حينها آن باترسون، مؤكداً دورها فيما حدث
وفي معرض تأكيده لما جرى، قال إن التلفزيون المصري أعلن نبأ فوز أحمد شفيق، ونسب إلى الصحفي المصري مصطفي بكري إعلانه أن قوات الأمن توجهت إلى منزل أحمد شفيق لحمايته
كما كشف قطان الذي كان يعمل في ذلك الوقت سفيراً للمملكة في مصر، أنه أرسل حينها تقريراً إلى وزير الخارجية السعودي الراحل سعود الفيصل قال فيه: “الحمد لله أن محمد مرسي هو من فاز في الانتخابات لأن مصر كانت ستحترق، لأن الإخوان المسلمين سيطروا على الشارع المصري وركبوا الموجة، وأصبحوا مسيطرين على كل كبيرة وصغيرة، وحمدت الله على أنه فاز، وأضفت أن أعمالهم ستنفضح خلال هذه السنة”، مشيراً إلى أن توقعاته في ذلك الوقت كانت تمثل في أن هؤلاء “لن يحكموا مصر
يذكر أن شفيق خسر الانتخابات الرئاسية عام 2012 أمام محمد مرسي المنتمي لجماعة الإخوان المسلمين. وكانت هذه أول انتخابات رئاسية تشهدها مصر في أعقاب انتفاضة 2011 التي أطاحت بالرئيس الأسبق حسني مبارك

وروى أن سعود الفيصل قدمه إلى كلينتون، وطلب منه أن يعطيها فكرة عن توقعاته، فقال لها إن “القوات المسلحة المصرية لن تسمح للإخوان المسلمين أن يحكموا مصر
