The Mauritanian President announces that he is going to be a candidate on the presidential elections scheduled to 29 June and promises to continue working on uniting the economically and socially marginalized groups, to better the living conditions and to strengthen their access to the basic services.

Mauritanian President Muḥammad Walad aš-Šayh al-Ġazwānī announced that he is going to be candidate of the presidential elections scheduled to be held on 29 June.
Walad aš-Šayh al-Ġazwānī in a message signed in his name addressed to the Mauritanians said that he decided to run for the presidential elections to gain trust for a next term, pointing out that he “since day one worked to run the presidency with full force and honesty without negligence to fulfill the provisions of his electoral program”.
He renewed his promise to work during his second term for “uniting the economically and socially fragile groups, to better their living conditions and to strengthen their access to the basic services”.
Walad aš-Šayh al-Ġazwānī is the ninth president of Mauritania, who held several posts, incl the director of military intelligence, security general director, Chief of Staff of the Army, defense minister, and has been the first officer of his country to gain the rank of Lieutenant General. That happened on 1 January 2012.
Walad al-Ġazwānī took office in his country following the 2019 elections with the support of his predecessor Muḥammad Walad ‘Abd al-‘Azīz, the majority support of the ruling forces and some groups of the opposition. After his election he won over other opposition factions as well.
Amongst the post he took was the President of the African Union following President of the Comoros Ġazālī ‘Utmānī, as Walad al-Ġazwānī took over the post on 17 February 2024 at the 37th summit of the Union at the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
It should be mentioned that according to the official results posted by the Electoral Commission in Nouakchott the ruling party in Mauritania won a major victory in the legislative and local elections held on 13 May.

أعلن الرئيس الموريتاني محمد ولد الشيخ الغزواني، ترشحه للانتخابات الرئاسية التي من المرتقب إجراؤها في 29 حزيران/يونيو المقبل.
وقال ولد الشيخ الغزواني، في رسالة موقّعة باسمه وجّهها إلى الموريتانيين، إنه قرّر خوض الانتخابات. الرئاسية لنيل ثقة الشعب لولاية جديدة، مشيراً إلى إنه عمل “منذ اليوم الأول لتولي الرئاسة بكل قوة وصدق. ودون كلل على التنفيذ الأمين لمقتضيات العقد الانتخابي”.
وجدد تعهده بمواصلة العمل خلال ولايته الثانية على “دمج الفئات الهشة اقتصادياً واجتماعياً. وتحسين ظروفها المعيشية وتعزيز نفاذها إلى الخدمات الأساسية”.
ويعتبر ولد الشيخ الغزواني الرئيس التاسع لموريتانيا، وتولى عدة مناصب بينها مدير الاستخبارات. العسكرية والمدير العام للأمن وقائد أركان الجيش ووزير الدفاع، ويعتبر أول ضابط في بلاده يحصل على رتبة. فريق، وكان ذلك في الأول من يناير/كانون الثاني 2012.
اعتلى ولد الغزواني السلطة في بلاده عقب انتخابات 2019 بدعم من سلفه محمد ولد عبد. العزيز وقوى الأغلبية الحاكمة وبعض تيارات المعارضة، وبعد انتخابه استمال أطياف معارضة أخرى.
من بين المناصب التي تقلدها، منصب الرئيس الدوري للاتحاد الأفريقي خلفاً لرئيس جزر القمر، غزالي. عثماني، حيث تسلم ولد الغزواني المنصب في 17 فبراير/فبراير 2024 في القمة الـ37 للاتحاد بالعاصمة الإثيوبية أديس أبابا.
يذكر أن الحزب الحاكم في موريتانيا حقّق فوزاً كبيراً، في الانتخابات التشريعية والإقليمية. والبلدية، التي أجريت في 13 أيار/مايو الجاري، حسب النتائج الرسمية التي نشرتها اللجنة الانتخابية في نواكشوط
