Moroccan King Muḥammad VI talks about Moroccan-Algerian relations and calls for opening the borders between the two countries.
On Saturday Moroccan King Muḥammad VI called upon Algeria to open the borders between the “two brotherly neighboring” countries and peoples.
In a speech to the Moroccan people on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of taking the throne, the king said that “we ought to serve our people, not solely on internal matters, but also we are keen to set up warm relations with the brotherly and friendly states, especially with the neighboring ones”.
He added that during the last few months, many people posed questions about the relations between Morocco and Algeria. “These are stable relations and we are looking forward to being better”.
He continued: “In this context, we once again confirm to our Algerians brothers, both to the leadership and the people that Morocco will never be a source of any evil, or wrongdoing, and it gives great importance to strive for loving and brotherly ties, and also exchange and contacts between our peoples”.
On 24 August 2021 Algeria broke relations with Morocco and the Algerian Foreign Minister at that time Ramṭān La‘māmara said that this came after “being proven historically that the Moroccan Kingdom doesn’t cease for a day with repulsive acts against our state since the independence. The intentions of Morocco are systematic and planned since the 1963 war against Algeria”.
He explained that the recent acts of “animosity” by Morocco were the statements of the Israeli Occupying Entity’s Foreign Minister from Morocco against Algeria, pointing out that such “has not happened since 1948 that an Israeli Minister would issue enemy statements from an Arab country against another Arab country”.
The borders between Algeria and Morocco are closed since 1994 after the explosions in the Atlas Asny Hotel in Marrakech when the late king al-Ḥassan II. imposed visas on Algerians to enter the country. This led Algeria at that time to close down the land borders between the two counties, which turmoil led to breaking the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

ملك المغرب محمد السادس، يتحدث عن العلاقات المغربية – الجزائرية، ويدعو إلى فتح الحدود بين البلدين
دعا ملك المغرب، محمد السادس، السبت، الجزائر إلى فتح الحدود بين البلدين والشعبين “الجارين الشقيقين”.
وقال الملك في خطاب للشعب المغربي بمناسبة الذكرى الـ24 لتوليه العرش إن “عملنا على خدمة شعبنا، لا يقتصر فقط على القضايا الداخلية، وإنما نحرص أيضاً على إقامة علاقات وطيدة مع الدول الشقيقة والصديقة، وخاصة دول الجوار”.
وأضاف أنه خلال الأشهر الأخيرة، يتساءل العديد من الناس عن العلاقات بين المغرب والجزائر، “وهي علاقات مستقرة، نتطلع لأن تكون أفضل”.
وتابع: “في هذا الصدد، نؤكد مرة أخرى، لإخواننا الجزائريين، قيادة وشعباً، أن المغرب لن يكون أبداً مصدر أي شر أو سوء، وكذا الأهمية البالغة، التي نوليها لروابط المحبة والصداقة، والتبادل والتواصل بين شعبينا”.
وفي 24 آب/أغسطس 2021، قطعت الجزائر علاقاتها مع المغرب، وقال وزير الخارجية الجزائري رمطان العمامرة، حينها إن ذلك يأتي بعد أن “ثبت تاريخياً أن المملكة المغربية لم تتوقف يوماً عن القيام بأعمال دنيئة ضد بلدنا منذ الاستقلال.. عداء المغرب ممنهج ومبيت، منذ حرب 1963 ضد الجزائر”.
وأوضح أن آخر الأعمال “العدائية” من المغرب تصريحات وزير خارجية كيان الاحتلال الاسرائيلي من المغرب ضد الجزائر، لافتاً إلى أنه “لم يحدث من سنة 1948 أن أصدر وزير إسرائيلي تصريحات عدوانية من دولة عربية ضد دولة عربية أخرى”.
وتعد الحدود بين المغرب والجزائر مغلقة منذ عام 1994 بعد تفجيرات فندق “أطلس أسني” بمراكش، عندما فرض الملك الراحل الحسن الثاني التأشيرة على الجزائريين لدخول البلاد، مما دفع الجزائر حينها إلى غلق الحدود البرية بين البلدين، كما تكرس هذا التوتر بقطع العلاقات الدبلوماسية بين البلدين
