The Algerian Parliament ratifies the decree that allows sending units of the Algerian National Army to Niger after the National Council and the People’s National Assembly approve the proposal of President ‘Abd al-Mağīd Tabbūn.

25  October

On Sunday the Algerian Parliament ratifies a decree allowing to send units of the Algerian National Army to Niger after the National Council and the People’s National Council approve the proposition of President ‘Abd al-Mağīd Tabbūn in a step that will follow the example of the first operation of deploying Algerian forces abroad since sending forces to support Egypt in the war of 1973.

The statement about the voting said that the presidential proposal about sending units of the army to abroad and specifically to the Republic of Niger gained the majority of the votes.

It pointed out that the Representatives unanimously approved deploying units of the National Army in Madama in Northern Niger, close to the Libyan border, at the site of a former French base that had been used during Operation Vulcan.

The National Council, the upper house of the parliament had unanimously approved the decree during a closed session held earlier on Sunday before the Parliament voted on the presidential proposal.

The second section of paragraph 91 in the Algerian Constitution stipulates the possibility of sending units of the army abroad in condition of obtaining the approval of two third of the members of both houses of the Parliament.

The decision comes after the visit by Prime Minister and National Defense Minister General Salifou Modi to Algerian, where he signed a military cooperation protocol with Chief of Staff of the Algerian People’s National Army General as-Sa‘īd Šanqrīḥa.

During the visit Šanqrīḥa confirmed the readiness of the Algerian Army to study the propositions that had been provided by Niger to enhance the military and security cooperation, while the Nigerien official praised the level of the currently standing coordination between the armed of the two countries. This is according to what was presented by the Algerian Defense Ministry.

Previously, at the end of August Algeria sent 4 “Su-30” type fighters in a duty to support the Nigerien Army after the events witnessed in the capital Niamey.

Tabbūn had connected sending fighters to “the coup attempt” witnessed in Niger.

This step sheds light on the rapidly importing relations between Algiers and Niamey after a period of tensions.
