That “Axios” website reports that Iran is about to propose to the United States suggesting that the two sides should work “formulating a temporary nuclear deal, paving the way negotiating a comprehensive deal”.
This track has a special importance in light of the threats of American President Donald Trump tinging a deadline of two months for a new nuclear deal with Tehran.
A European diplomatic source pointed out that the Iranian leadership believes that reaching a comprehensive agreement is difficult from the technical perspective within two months, “which is an unrealistic matter, so it aims to gain more time to prevent the escalation”.
Also Director of the Iran Project in the international crisis group ‘Alī Wā‘iẓ that the Iranians believe that achieving a sustainable agreement within the timeframe that was set by Trump is “unlikely”, so therefore it might be necessary to “think about a temporary agreement as a temporary position on the way to a final agreement”.
On its behalf the Iranian U.N. delegation refused to comment the report.
As for the stipulations of a possible temporary agreement they might include suspending some Iranian uranium enrichment activities and reducing the Iranian stockpiles of the 60% enriched uranium, also allowing the U.N. inspectors to reach a larger range of Iranian nuclear facilities.
The temporary agreement might also include extending the work of the “fast return” mechanism that was part of the 2015 nuclear deal, which allows reinstating the Security Council’s sanctions on Iran in case it violated the agreement, keeping in mind that this mechanism was scheduled to end next October.
Most likely Iran, in case a temporary deal was reached, will request Trump suspending the “maximum pressure” campaign that targets the Iranian economy, while it is unclear if the American president is about to agree to this.
The Trump administration has already imposed two new sets of sanctions on Iranian persons and companies connected to the nuclear program the oil sector in Iran.
It should be remembered that American envoy of the White House Steve Vitkoff will hold negotiations with Iranian Foreign Minister ‘Abbās ‘Arāqčī this Saturday in Sultanate of Oman.
While Washington confirms that the negotiations will be direct Tehran stresses that the negotiations will go on via Omani mediators.
On Wednesday President Trump told reporters in the office of the White House that there is “a little time… but not much” to conduct negotiations and added: “When the negotiations start you know fast if it was going right or not. If you feel if doesn’t go tight than you take the necessary decision”.
