American Assistant State Secretary Molly Phee visits Sudan and meets with a number of Sudanese politicians and military personnel, including deposed Sudanese Prime Minister ‘Abd Allah Ḥamdūk.
American Assistant State Secretary Molly Phee said that she met today, on Tuesday with deposed Sudanese Prime Minister ‘Abd Allah Ḥamdūk during her visit to Khartoum and “with him she studied the ways of restoring the path of the democratic transition in the country”.
During her visit to Sudan, which lasted for 3 days Phee also met with commander of the army General ‘Abd al-Fattāḥ al-Burhān, who informed her that “steps to release the political prisoners who were taken prisoner during the power takeover have started” according to the Sudanese News Agency, which added that the release “will not extend to those who face criminal charges”.
The American embassy said that Phee also met with the Foreign Minister al-Burhān deposed, Maryam al-Mahdī “to initiate the support of the United States for the transitional government led by the civilians”.
A member of the ruling Transitional Council Mālik ‘Aqqār said in a press statement that “Prime Minister ‘Abd Allah Ḥamdūk and the other detainees within a day or two will be released”. Ḥamdūk was put into house arrest in his home under heavy guardianship since the army taking over power last month.
The local “Resistance Committees” in all areas of the capital have organized protests on the main roads and within the districts for Wednesday to demand all civil powers to be handed over to the leaders of the coup to be trialed.
Hundreds of thousands of people went on to protests in various regions of the country last Saturday facing teargas and live fire from the security forces. According to the Sudanese Doctors’ Committee 7 people got killed and thus the number of those killed since the coup raised to 23.
The Resistance Committee and the profession groups complain about arrests against their activists and being detained since the beginning of the coup. A number of high ranking civil officials were arrested since the coup started on 25 October.

كما التقت فيي، أثناء زيارتها للسودان التي استمرت 3 أيام، مع قائد الجيش الفريق أول عبد الفتاح البرهان، الذي أخبرها بأن “خطوات الإفراج عن المعتقلين السياسيين الذين تم اعتقالهم أثناء السيطرة على السلطة قد بدأت”، وفقاً لوكالة السودان للأنباء، التي أضافت أن الإفراج “لن يشمل من يواجهون اتهامات جنائية
وقالت السفارة الأميركية إن فيي التقت أيضاً مع وزيرة الخارجية في الحكومة التي حلها البرهان، مريم المهدي، “لإبداء دعم الولايات المتحدة للحكومة الانتقالية التي يقودها المدنيون
وقال العضو بمجلس السيادة الحاكم، مالك عقار، في تصريحٍ صحفي، إنه “سيتم إطلاق سراح رئيس الوزراء عبد الله حمدوك والمعتقلين الآخرين خلال يوم أو يومين”. ويخضع حمدوك للإقامة الجبرية في منزله تحت حراسة مشددة، منذ استيلاء الجيش على السلطة الشهر الماضي
