The Syrian President welcomes the Foreign Minister of the Emirates in Damascus, where the ways to develop the economic and trade relations between the two states have been studied.
On Wednesday Syrian President Baššār al-Asad received Emirati Foreign Minister ‘Abd Allah ibn Zāyid Āl Nahyān in the presidential palace in Damascus and the two discussed the ways to develop the common economic relations.
The official Syrian News Agency SANA mentioned that al-Asad “together with the Emirati Foreign Minister has studied the relations between Syria and the Emirates, the current cooperation between themselves on a number of fields and the development of the economic and trade relations serving the interest of the two countries”.

On its own behalf, the Emirati Foreign Ministry has published a statement about the meeting and has confirmed that the two sides “have discussed a number of mutually important international and regional matters, thus including the development of the situation in Syrian and the Middle Eastern region”.
It mentioned that the Emirati Minister “confirmed the commitment of his country to support the efforts that have been taken to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis restoring the security, stability, and unity of Syria”.
Improvement in the bilateral relations
Syrian-Emirati relations have witnessed a major improvement during the last few years.
Syrian President Baššār al-Asad visited the State of the Emirates in March last year. The visit was the first one for him to an Arab state since the beginning of the Syrian crisis in 2011. There he met Abū Zabī Crown Prince [at that time] Muḥammad ibn Zāyid Āl Nahyān and the ruler of Dubai Muḥammad ibn Rāšid Āl Maktūm.
The two sides during the meeting confirmed the importance of “brotherly relations and joint cooperation and coordination between the two brotherly countries”.
It also highlighted how important it is to “preserve the Syrian territorial unity and withdraw the foreign forces, while also how Syria and its people support political and humanly reaching a peaceful solution to all the threats it faces”.
On his behalf, Ibn Zāyid said: “brotherly Syria counts to be one of the central focus points of the Arab security’s fundamentals and the State of the Emirates is dedicated to strengthening the cooperation with it for achieving the expectations of the brotherly Syrian people for stability and progress”.
In October 2011 President al-Asad held a telephone conversation with Abū Zabī Crown Prince discussing “the ways to strengthen the relations between the two states and other developments in the situation on the regional and international levels”.

The journey of Ibn Zāyid to Damascus is not his first one
It should be pointed out that Emirati Foreign Minister ‘Abd Allah ibn Zāyid has visited the Syrian capital Damascus more than once. Last time on 9 November 2021 and at that time stated that “Syria under the leadership of al-Asad is capable of surpassing the threats”.
The Emirati Foreign Minister also said in March 2021 that Syria’s return to its Arab surrounding “is an inescapable matter, which is the interest of Syria and the region”.
The Emirates reopened its embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus in 2018 after 7 years of being closed down and the relations being cut with Syria”.
At that time the Emirati News Agency said that reopening the embassy in Damascus “proves the dedication to reopening the relations to their natural track with Syria with the aim to block the threats of regional interventions in the Syrian Arab matters”.

الرئيس السوري يستقبل وزير الخارجية الإماراتي في دمشق، حيث تمت مناقشة سبل تطوير العلاقات الاقتصادية والتجارية بين البلدي
استقبل الرئيس السوري بشار الأسد، اليوم الأربعاء، وزير الخارجية الإماراتي عبد الله بن زايد آل نهيان، في القصر الرئاسي في دمشق، وناقشا سبل تطوير العلاقات الاقتصادية المشتركة.
وكالة الأنباء السورية الرسمية (سانا) ذكرت أنّ الأسد “بحث مع وزير الخارجية الإماراتي العلاقات بين سوريا والإمارات والتعاون القائم بينهما في العديد من المجالات، وتطوير العلاقات الاقتصادية والتجارية لما فيه مصلحة البلدين”.
تحسّن في العلاقات الثنائية
وتشهد العلاقات السورية الإماراتية تحسّناً كبيراً خلال السنوات الأخيرة.
وكان الرئيس السوري بشار اﻷسد زار دولة الإمارات، في آذار/مارس الماضي، في زيارة هي الأولى له لدولة عربية منذ بدء الأزمة السورية عام 2011، حيث التقى ولي عهد أبو ظبي محمد بن زايد آل نهيّان، وحاكم دبي محمد بن راشد آل مكتوم.
وأكّد الجانبان خلال اللقاء أهمية “العلاقات الأخوية والتعاون والتنسيق المشترك بين البلدين الشقيقين”.
كما جرى التشديد على ضرورة “المحافظة على وحدة الأراضي السورية، وانسحاب القوات الأجنبية، إلى جانب دعم سوريا وشعبها سياسياً وإنسانياً، للوصول إلى حلّ سلمي لجميع التحديات التي يواجهها”.
من جهته قال ابن زايد: “سوريا الشقيقة تُعَد ركيزة أساسية من ركائز الأمن العربي، ودولة الإمارات حريصة على تعزيز التعاون معها، على نحو يحقق تطلعات الشعب السوري الشقيق نحو الاستقرار والتنمية”.
وفي تشرين الأول/أكتوبر 2021، أجرى الرئيس الأسد اتصالاً هاتفياً بولي عهد أبو ظبي، ناقشا خلاله “سبل تعزيز العلاقات بين البلدين وآخر تطورات الأوضاع في الساحتين الإقليمية والدولية”
زيارة ابن زايد إلى دمشق ليست الأولى
يُشار إلى أنّ وزير الخارجية الإماراتي عبد الله بن زايد، سبق أن زار العاصمة السورية دمشق غير مرة، آخرها في 9 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 2021، وصرّح حينها أنّ “سوريا بقيادة الأسد قادرة على تجاوز التحديات”.
كما قال وزير الخارجية الإماراتي، في آذار/مارس 2021، إنّ عودة سوريا إلى محيطها العربي “أمر لا بدّ منه، وهو من مصلحة سوريا والمنطقة”.
وكانت الإمارات أعادت افتتاح سفارتها في العاصمة السورية دمشق عام 2018، بعد 7 سنوات من الإغلاق وقطع علاقاتها مع سوريا.
وقالت وكالة أنباء الإمارات يومها إن إعادة فتح السفارة في دمشق “يؤكّد الحرص على إعادة العلاقات إلى مسارها الطبيعيّ مع سوريا، ويهدف إلى درء مخاطر التدخّلات الإقليمية في الشأن العربي السوري
