Iraq reopens the historic Grand Nūrī Mosque and its minaret in Mosul 8 years after Dā‘iš had destroyed it.

Iraqi Prime Minister Muḥammad Šayyā‘ as-Sūdānī took part on Monday on the reopening of the historic Grand Nūrī Mosque and its minaret in the hearth of Mosul old town 8 years after the Dā‘iš Organization had destroyed it.
Muḥammad Šayyā‘ as-Sūdānī said that “the reconstruction of the mosque will remain a major turning point, as every enemy will remember the heroism of the Iraqis, how they defended their land and that they reconstructed everything everything was destroyed by those, who want to corrupt the truth”.
In a statement he added that the city of Mosul hosts all of its components and “incorporates all segments of the multicultural Iraqi society”.
The UN organization UNESCO along with the Iraqi authorities designated for archaeology and Sunni religious parties have been working in the reconstruction of the minaret using traditional techniques and materials that had been excavated from the ruins.
UNESCO collected $115 million for the construction project, as the minaret was a major symbol and an iconic landmark for 850 years.
In 2014 leader of the Dā‘iš Movement Abū Bakr al-Baġdādī announced the so called “Caliphate” there by holding a Friday sermon speech and led a prayer.
Later on the organization destroyed the mosque by blowing it up with explosives inside when it was facing defeat in a battle with the Iraqi forces taking control over the city in 2017.
In addition to the mosque, churches damaged by the acts of war have also been repaired within the reconstruction project with the aim of preserving the heritage of the remaining Christian community in the city.

أشرف رئيس الوزراء العراقي، محمد شياع السوداني، اليوم الاثنين، على افتتاح جامع. النوري الكبير التاريخي ومنارته الحدباء في قلب المدينة القديمة في الموصل، بعد 8 أعوام من تدميره على يد تنظيم “داعش”.
وقال محمد شياع السوداني إن “إعادة إعمار المسجد ستبقى محطةً بارزة، تذكّر كل. الأعداء ببطولة العراقيين، ودفاعهم عن أرضهم، وإعادتهم بناء كل ما دمّره الذين أرادوا طمس الحقيقة”.
وأضاف، في بيانٍ، أن مدينة الموصل تحتضن جميع مكوّناتها و”تجسد كل. سمات المجتمع العراقي المتنوع”.
وعملت منظمة “اليونسكو” إلى جانب السلطات العراقية المختصة بالتراث والجهات. الدينية السنية، على إعادة بناء المنارة باستخدام تقنيات تقليدية ومواد أُعيد استخراجها من الركام.
وجمعت “اليونسكو” 115 مليون دولار لمشروع الإعمار، فيما بقيت على مدى. نحو 850 عاماً المنارة الحدباء رمزاً بارزاً ومعْلماً أيقونياً.
وفي عام 2014، أعلن زعيم “داعش” أبو بكر البغدادي ما سُمّي بـ”الخلافة” هناك. من خلال إلقاء خطبة الجمعة وإمامة الصلاة.
وفي وقت لاحق، دمّر التنظيم المسجد بتفجير عبوات ناسفة داخله حين كان يواجه. الهزيمة في معركة مع القوات العراقية للسيطرة على المدينة عام 2017.
