The newly appointed head of the Iraqi government Muṣṭafā al-Kāẓimī studied law he is a journalist and a writer and has been working as Director of Intelligence since 2016.
Today, on Thursday the Iraqi President Barham Ṣāliḥ appointed Muṣṭafā al-Kāẓimī to form the Iraqi government, after his predecessor, ‘Adnān az-Zurufī withdrew.
Al-Kāẓimī (Muṣṭafā ‘Abd Allah Mušattat) was born in Baghdad in 1967 to the al-Ġarībāwī family in the aš-Šaṭra district of Dī Qār Province.
Al-Kāẓimī holds a BA in law, belongs to the Western Leftist Secular view, and was a representative of the “National Democratic Party” [al-Ḥizb al-Waṭanī ad-Dīmuqrāṭī] in aš-Šaṭra, which was founded by Kamāl al-Ğādirğī.
Mušattat left the country in 1985 via Iraqi Kurdistan to Germany than to the U.K. and he chose the “al-Kāẓimī” family name for himself during his journalist work.
The appointed head of government in 2010 became chief editor “weekly” Iraq Newsweek for three years, which was printed in Beirut, and he also worked as a writer and director editor for the Iraqi section for the international site “al-Monitor”, where his articles concentrated on “the endearment of the social peaceful spirit in the country”.
Al-Kāẓimī directed the “Human Dialogue Association” in London founded by as-Sayyid Ḥussayn aṣ-Ṣadr, as he also wrote a number of books, most noticeable amongst these are “Iraqi question” and the “Interests between the past and the future”.
One of the brothers of al-Kāẓimī, a doctor in constructional engineering Ṣabāḥ Mušattat is the brother-in-law of former Iraqi Prime Minister Ḥaydar al-‘Abādī and worked as one of his advisors during his tenure as head of government.
As for his brother ‘Imād, he was sentenced to execution in 1981, as he was one of the friends of the late Sayyid Muḥammad Bāqir al-Ḥakīm, and spent three years in prison, until he was pardoned in 2013. He was shot by 14 bullets on the Haifa street by the “Dā‘iš” terrorist organization when he was an advisor for the Prime Minister, which lead to his paralysis.
Muṣṭafā al-Kāẓimī got appointed as the director of the Iraqi Intelligence Service in 2016, and he continued in this post until now, when it was agreed to charge him with forming the government today after az-Zurufī retired.

يحمل الكاظمي شهادة بكالوريوس في القانون، وينتمي إلى مدرسة اليسار الغربي العلماني، وكان ممثلاً لـ”الحزب الوطني الديمقراطي” في الشطرة وقد أسسه كامل الجادرجي
غادر مشتت البلاد عام 1985 عن طريق كردستان العراق إلى ألمانيا ثمّ بريطانيا، واختار لنفسه لقب “الكاظمي” خلال عمله كصحفي
تولّى رئيس الحكومة المكلّف في العام 2010 ولمدة 3 سنوات، رئاسة تحرير مجلة “الأسبوعيّة” Iraq newsweek التي تصدر من بيروت،كما عمل كاتباً ومديراً لتحرير قسم العراق في موقع “المونيتور” الدولي حيث ركزت مقالاته على “تكريس روح السلم الإجتماعي في البلاد
وأدار الكاظمي “مؤسسة الحوار الإنساني” في لندن لمؤسسها السيد حسين الصدر، كما ألّف العديد من الكتب أبرزها “مسألة العراق” و”المصالحة بين الماضي والمستقبل
أحد أشقاء الكاظمي، الدكتور في الهندسة المعمارية صباح مشتت، هو عديل رئيس الوزراء العراقي السابق حيدر العبادي، وعمل مستشاراً له خلال توليه رئاسة الحكومة
أمّا شقيقه عماد، فحُكم عليه بالإعدام عام 1981 كونه كان أحد أصدقاء السيد الراحل محمد باقر الحكيم، وقضى في السجن 3 سنوات حتى أعفي عنه عام 2013. أدى تعرضه إلى 14 طلقة نارية في شارع حيفا من قبل تنظيم “داعش” الإرهابي حيث كان يعمل مستشاراً في رئاسة الوزراء، إلى إصابته بالشلل
عُيّن مصطفى الكاظمي رئيساً لجهاز المخابرات العراقية عام 2016، واستمر في منصبه إلى حين الاتفاق على تكليفه تشكيل الحكومة اليوم، بعد انسحاب الزرفي
