A short while ago the Supreme Constitutional Court in Syria announced the names of the candidates for the presidential elections. The most important amongst them is President Baššār Ḥāfiẓ al-Asad, but who are his rivals in this election?

Al-‘Ālam – Syria

The two candidates represent two parties. The first is allied to the ruling Socialist Arabic al-Ba‘at Party, while the other is described to be within the internal opposition.

‘Abd Allah Sallūm ‘Abd Allah

According to his CV available on the National Assembly’s website ‘Abd Allah Sallūm ‘Abd Allah is described as:

  • One of the former members of the Syrian National Assembly in the legislative period of 2012-2016.
  • Comes from the province of Aleppo, from the city of “A‘zāz”, and he was born in 1956.
  • He is one of the candidates in the elections to be the president of the Syrian Arab Republic.
  • He applied to be a candidate for the post of the President of the Syrian Arab Republic on 19 April 2021, and his request was accepted on 3 May in the same year.
  • He holds a membership in the “Socialist Unionists’ Party”.
  • Previously worked as State Minister for Parliamentary Affairs between July 2016 and August 2020. He was also a member of the Syrian National Assembly in the first legislative period between 2012 and 2016 and in the eighth legislative period between 2003 and 2007.
  • He was the Rural Damascus branch secretary for the Socialist Unionists’ Party and a member of the Political Bureau in the same party.
  • He gained a law degree from the University of Damascus

 

Maḥmūd Mara‘ī

In the followings we share some of the personal data about him:

  • Maḥmūd Aḥmad Mara‘ī is a candidate for the Syrian presidency.
  • He was born in rural Damascus.
  • He was born in 1957.
  • He has a law degree from the University of Damascus.
  • Presidential candidate Maḥmūd Aḥmad Mara‘ī worked on a number of positions before, including:
    • Secretary-General for the oppositional Syrian Democratic Front.
    • Member of the internal opposition delegation at the Geneva negotiations.
  • He was a founding member of the “Democratic National Work Organization”, which announced itself at the foundation conference at the Umayya Hotel in May 2014. He also took part in the opposition conference after his matters were sorted out with the authorities.

Mara‘ī worked as the Secretary-General of the same organization.

Since December 2016 Mar‘aī became Secretary-General for the Syrian Democratic Front, which was founded in late December by the alliance of a number of political identities and forces, some of them officially recognized parties. However, it [the party] is not really known inside the country and has little impactful or noticeable activity in the Syrian political life.

Mara ‘ī was born in 1957 and holds a law degree.

ينحدر من محافظة “حلب” مدينة “أعزاز”، وهو من مواليد 1956م

هو أحد المرشحين لرئاسة الجمهورية العربية السورية

قدم طلب ترشيح لمنصب رئيس الجمهورية العربية السورية في 19 أبريل (نيسان) 2021، وتم قبول طلبه بتاريخ 3 مايو (أيار) من العام ذاته

يشغل عضوية “حزب الوحدويين الاشتراكيين

شغل سابقا منصب وزير دولة لشؤون مجلس الشعب بين يوليو (تموز) 2016 و أغسطس (آب) 2020، كما كان عضواً في “مجلس الشعب السوري” للدور التشريعي الأول بين 2012 و2016، والدور التشريعي الثامن بين 2003 و

كان أميناً لفرع ريف دمشق لـ”حزب الوحدويين الاشتراكيين”، وعضواً في المكتب السياسي في الحزب ذاته

كما و شغل محمود احمد مرعي مرشح الرئاسة السوري العديد من المناصب و منها

– منصب الأمين العام للجبهة الديمقراطية المعارضة السورية

ـ عضو وفد معارضة الداخل المفاوض في جنيف

كان من مؤسسي “هيئة العمل الوطني الديمقراطي” التي أعلنت عن نفسها في مؤتمر تأسيسي في فندق أمية بدمشق في مايو عام 2014. (وشارك في المؤتمر معارضون بعد تسوية أوضاعهم مع السلطات)

وشغل مرعي موقع الأمين العام لتلك الهيئة

ومنذ ديسمبر 2016 أصبح مرعي “الأمين العام للجبهة الديمقراطية السورية” التي تأسست في نهاية ديسمبر من تحالف عدد من القوى والكيانات السياسية بعضها أحزاب مرخصة، إلا أنها غير معروفة داخل البلاد، وليس لها نشاط مؤثر وفاعل في الحياة السياسية السورية
