Deputy Assistant of the American State Secretary in charge of the Middle East matters says that his country might impose sanctions against Iraq in case it deploys the S-400 missile defense system.
Deputy Assistant of the American State Secretary in charge of the Middle East Joey Hood said the his country might impose sanctions on Iraq in case it employs the S-400 missile defense system.
In his side the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow does not fear sanctions in case it delivers the “S-400” missile systems to Iraq.
The Iraqi ambassador in Tehran, Sa‘ad Ğawād Qandīl already affirmed this week to the “Sputnik” network that Baghdad is in negotiations with Russia about buying the S-300 missile air defense system, drawing attention to the likelihood of buying the system.
Qandīl said that this matter of the S-300 is on the table between Iraq and Russia.
Previously the president of the Defense and Security Committee in the Iraqi Parliament, Muḥammad Riḍā announced that Baghdad conducted negotiations with Moscow about the purchase of S-300 systems.
Iraq tries to buy Russian air defense systems since 2017, but for the threats of imposing economic sanctions by the United States still trouble the talks.
This missile system, which’s range extends to 400 kilometers, is among the most developed systems, which is capable of destroying targets moving with the speed of 5 km/s, meaning airplanes and self guided, middle-ranged and cruise missiles.

ويعد هذا النظام الصاروخي الذي يصل مداه إلى أربعمئة كيلومترا أحد أكثر الأنظمة تطوراً، ويستطيع تدمير أهداف تتحرك بسرعة خمسة كيلومترات في الثانية، بما فيها الطائرات والصواريخ ذاتية الدفع ومتوسطة المدى والصواريخ المجنحة
