Pakistani Prime Minister ‘Imrān Hān is heading to Moscow this week to meet with President Vladimir Putin in the first visit of its kind for a Pakistani leader for two decades.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said in a statement reported by Reuters that “during the summit meeting the two leaders will address a whole set of matters about the bilateral relations, including the cooperation in energy sector”.
The Ministry added that Hān and Putin will also discuss some matters, including that of Afghanistan. According to Reuters the schedule of the visit that will start at Wednesday was to last two days before the current crisis in Ukraine.
In an interview printed today Hān downplayed “the importance of the timing of the visit, or that it would have any affect on Pakistan’s relations with the West, which considers Islamabad one of its allies on the long run”.
To the Pakistani “Newsweek” magazine Hān said: this visit had been planned long before the present form of the crisis in Ukraine erupted. We have received the invitation of President Putin long before that”.
It should be remembered that the relations between Pakistan and Russia fell back for years with Islamabad leaning towards the United States during the Cold War. Washington made it the “most important ally outside the NATO” after the invasion of Afghanistan by the American forces in 2001.
In the last few years the relations between the United States and Pakistan crumbled and the ice broke between Moscow and Islamabad. The two sides planned projects together on the natural gas and energy fields.

أعلنت إسلام أباد، اليوم الإثنين، توجه رئيس الوزراء الباكستاني عمران خان إلى موسكو هذا الأسبوع، للقاء الرئيس فلاديمير بوتين، في أول زيارة من نوعها لزعيم باكستاني منذ عقدين.
وقالت وزارة الخارجية الباكستانية في بيان نقلته وكالة “رويترز” إنه “خلال اجتماع القمة، سيستعرض الزعيمان مجموعة كاملة من العلاقات الثنائية بما في ذلك التعاون في مجال الطاقة”.
وأضافت الوزارة أن خان وبوتين سيناقشان أيضاً قضايا من بينها الوضع في أفغانستان. وخُطط للزيارة التي تبدأ الأربعاء وتستغرق يومين قبل الأزمة الحالية في أوكرانيا، وفقا لـ”رويترز”.
وفي مقابلة نشرت اليوم، قلل خان من “أهمية توقيت الزيارة وأي تأثير لها على علاقات باكستان مع الغرب الذي اعتبر إسلام أباد أحد حلفائه لفترة طويلة”.
وقال خان لمجلة “نيوزويك” الباكستانية: “خطط لهذه الزيارة قبل وقت طويل من ظهور المرحلة الحالية من الأزمة في أوكرانيا، تلقيت دعوة من الرئيس بوتين قبل ذلك بكثير”.
يذكر أن العلاقات بين باكستان وروسيا تراجعت لسنوات مع “انحياز” إسلام أباد إلى الولايات المتحدة خلال الحرب الباردة. ومنحتها واشنطن وضع “حليف رئيسي من خارج الناتو” بعد غزو القوات الأميركية لأفغانستان في عام 2001.
