U.N. envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg is sorry for not reaching an agreement to extend the ceasefire after its timespan ended on Sunday.
U.N. Secretary-General special envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg expressed his regret for not reaching an agreement to extend the ceasefire after its timespan ended on Sunday.
The U.N. envoy in a statement of his explained that the expanded and extended ceasefire on its own grants important additional benefits to the population, also adding that he handed in a proposal to the Yemeni sides on 1 October to extend the ceasefire to an additional 6 months, but also having other components.
He confirmed that the ceasefire extension proposal included paying the civil servant employees, opening certain highways in Ta‘izz and other provinces, operating additional destinations for trade journeys via the Sana‘a airport, and letting oil carrier ships enter the port of al-Ḥudayda without obstacles.
The U.N. envoy expressed his gratitude for what he described as “constructive” involvement from both sides on the leadership level during the last few weeks, appreciating the position of the Yemeni government for “positively” dealing with his proposals.
He also confirmed that the work will go on with both sides trying to find solutions and that he will continue his extended efforts to engage with all parties to swiftly reach an agreement about how to proceed.
In the statement, Grundberg called upon the Yemeni sides to “preserve the ceasefire and to prevent any forms of provocations or acts that might lead to the escalation of violence”.
After Sunday noon the timespan outlined in the humanitarian and military ceasefire signed under U.N. oversight to halt all attacking military operations within Yemen and over its borders.
The Supreme Political Council in Yemen on Sunday confirmed: “not allowing the ceasefire being transformed to be indefinite, as it was only a method to reach a final agreement”. Also disapproving “the stalling of the U.N. and its proposals on paper not responding to the demands of the Yemeni people and not laying the groundwork for a peace process”.
In the meantime, the President of Sana‘a’s negotiating delegation Muḥammad ‘Abd al-Salām confirmed that “there is no truth in what certain media channels agitated about an agreement to extend the ceasefire”, and that previously the delegation expressed its position and the demands of the Yemeni people about extending the ceasefire.

عبّر المبعوث الخاص للأمين العام للأمم المتحدة إلى اليمن، هانس غروندبرغ، عن أسفه لعدم التوصل إلى اتفاق على تمديد الهدنة بعد انتهاء سريانها اليوم الأحد
وأوضح المبعوث الأممي في البيان الصادر عنه، أنّ الهدنة الممتدة والموسعة من شأنها توفير فوائد هامة إضافية للسكان، مضيفاً أنّه قدم مقترحاً إلى الأطراف اليمنية في 1 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر لتمديد الهدنة لمدة 6 أشهر، مع إضافة عناصر أخرى إضافية
وأكد أنّ مقترح تمديد الهدنة تضمّن دفع رواتب موظفي الخدمة المدنية، وفتح طرق محددة في تعز ومحافظات أخرى، وتسيير وجهات إضافية للرحلات التجارية من وإلى مطار صنعاء، ودخول سفن الوقود إلى ميناء الحُديدة من دون عوائق
وعبّر المبعوث الأممي عن امتنانه لما وصفه بالانخراط “البنّاء” من كلا الجانبين على مستوى القيادة خلال الأسابيع الماضية، مثمّناً موقف الحكومة اليمنية للتعاطي مع مقترحه “بشكلٍ إيجابي
كما أكّد أنّه سيستمر في العمل مع كلا الجانبين سعياً لإيجاد حلول، وسيواصل جهوده الحثيثة للانخراط مع الأطراف بغية التوصل على وجه السرعة إلى اتفاق بشأن كيفية المضي قدماً.
ودعا غروندبرغ في البيان، الأطراف اليمنية إلى “الحفاظ على الهدوء والامتناع عن أي شكل من أشكال الاستفزازات أو الأعمال التي قد تؤدي إلى تصعيد العنف
وبعد ظهر اليوم انقضى الوقت المحدد للهدنة الإنسانية والعسكرية التي رعتها الأمم المتحدة بوقف جميع العمليات العسكرية الهجومية داخل اليمن وعبر حدوده.
وكان المجلس السياسي الأعلى في اليمن أكد، اليوم الأحد، “عدم السماح بأن تتحول الهدنة إلى غاية كونها كانت مجرّد وسيلة للوصول لاتفاق نهائي”، مستهجناً “تلكؤ الأمم المتحدة وطرحها لورقة لا ترقى لمطالب الشعب اليمني ولا تؤسس لعملية السلام
فيما أكّد رئيس وفد صنعاء المفاوض، محمد عبد السلام، أنّه “لا صحة لما أوردته بعض الوسائل الإعلامية المغرضة عن اتفاق على تمديد الهدنة”، وأنّه سبق وأوضح الوفد موقفه ومطالب الشعب اليمني بشأن تمديد الهدنة
