The election of aš-Šayh Miš‘al al-Aḥmad al-Ğābir aṣ-Ṣabāḥ as Crown Prince of Kuwait came shortly before the National Assembly (Parliament) approved this appointment.
Minister of the Emiri Council Affaires aš-Šayh ‘Alī Ğarrāḥ aṣ-Ṣabāḥ announced that the aṣ-Ṣabāḥ dynasty approved the election by the Emir of Kuwait, aš-Šayh Nawwāf al-Aḥmad al-Ğābir aṣ-Ṣabāḥ his brother, aš-Šayh Miš‘al al-Aḥmad al-Ğābir aṣ-Ṣabāḥ to be the Crown Prince.
He became elected, as the National Assembly (Parliament) approved this appointment.
Who is aš-Šayh Miš‘al al-Aḥmad?
Aš-Šayh Miš‘al al-Aḥmad, who is over 80 years old, is the seventh son of aš-Šayh al-Aḥmad al-Ğābir aṣ-Ṣabāḥ, the tenth ruler of Kuwait, father of the late aš-Šayh aṣ-Ṣabāḥ al-Aḥmad al-Ğābir aṣ-Ṣabāḥ and the current Emir aš-Šayh Nawwāf al-Aḥmad.
Aš-Šayh Miš‘al, the half-brother of the new Emir, is described by his strict personality and was always a companion of the late Emir during all his treatment trips, including the last one to the United States of America.
In 2004 the late Emir aš-Šayh aṣ-Ṣabāḥ al-Aḥmad al-Ğābir aṣ-Ṣabāḥ issued and Emiri decree appointing him as Deputy Commander of the National Guard in the rank of Minister.
Previously he had led the State Security Service and worked in the Interior Ministry. He held no Ministerial post and stayed far from the political struggles, which were led by many members of the ruling family.
Aš-Šayh Miš‘al has strong connections within the National Guard, which is a military body independent from the army forces, and the police aimed to assist the armed forces and the general security authorities and to support the aims of national defense.
Aš-Šayh Miš‘al, who graduated from the Hendon Police College in the U.K. in 1960, is described as one of the most important security personnel in the Kuwaiti fold, as he was the director of the General Researches between 1967 and 1980, which service was transformed by him into the administration of “State Security”, and which still functions in Kuwait under this name.
The strong role of the Kuwaiti National Guard became prominent with the intensification of the Corona crisis in the country, as it supported the army forces and the police in the security lockdown, the health curfew, and in overcoming various sides of the crisis. So much so that this service was charged with administering some of the cooperation and consumption societies.
It should be remembered that the Kuwaiti Emiri Council had announced on 29 September the death of the Emir of Kuwait aš-Šayh aṣ-Ṣabāḥ al-Aḥmad al-Ğābir aṣ-Ṣabāḥ at the age of 92 in the United States, where he arrived to in July to receive treatment. The throne was passed on to his more than 83 years old Crown Prince aš-Šayh Nawwāf, who got elected on 30 September.

أعلن وزير شؤون الديوان الأميري بالكويت، الشيخ علي جراح الصباح، أن أسرة الصباح باركت تزكية أمير البلاد الشيخ نواف الأحمد الجابر الصباح لشقيقه الشيخ مشعل الأحمد الجابر الصباح ولياً للعهد
ويتعين أن يوافق مجلس الأمة (البرلمان) على هذا التعيين
من هو الشيخ مشعل الأحمد؟
والشيخ مشعل الأحمد، الذي يبلغ من العمر (80 عاماً)، هو الابن السابع للشيخ أحمد الجابر الصباح حاكم الكويت العاشر، والد الأمير الراحل الشيخ صباح الأحمد، والأمير الحالي الشيخ نواف الأحمد
ويتسم الشيخ مشعل الأخ غير الشقيق للأمير الجديد، بشخصيته الصارمة، وكان مرافقاً دائماً للأمير الراحل خلال جميع رحلاته العلاجية ومن ضمنها رحلته الأخيرة إلى الولايات المتحدة الأميركية
وأصدر الأمير الراحل الشيخ جابر الأحمد الجابر الصباح في عام 2004 مرسوماً أميرياً بتعيينه نائباً لرئيس الحرس الوطني بدرجة وزير
تولى في السابق رئاسة جهاز أمن الدولة وعمل في وزارة الداخلية، ولم يتول حقيبة وزارية وظل بعيداً عن المعارك السياسية التي خاضعها كثيرون من أفراد الأسرة الحاكمة
ويتمتع الشيخ مشعل بنفوذ قوي داخل الحرس الوطني، وهو جهاز عسكري مستقل عن قوات الجيش والشرطة، ويهدف إلى مساعدة القوات المسلحة وهيئات الأمن العام والمساهمة في أغراض الدفاع الوطني
ويوصف الشيخ مشعل، الذي تخرّج من كلية هندون للشرطة في بريطانيا عام 1960، بأنه واحد من أهم رجال الأمن بفي لكويت، حيث كان رئيساً للمباحث العامة في 1967 إلى 1980، وتحول هذا الجهاز على يديه إلى إدارة “أمن الدولة” التي لا تزال تعمل في الكويت تحت هذا الاسم
وبرز الدور القوي للحرس الوطني الكويتي الذي يرأسه مع اشتداد أزمة كورونا في البلاد، حيث ساند قوات الجيش والشرطة في حفظ الأمن وتطبيق حظر التجول والتغلب على الجوانب المختلفة من الأزمة، حتى أن هذا الجهاز أنيط به إدارة بعض الجمعيات التعاونية الاستهلاكية
يذكر أن الديوان الأميري الكويتي، أعلن يوم 29 أيلول/سبتمبر، عن وفاة أمير الكويت صباح الأحمد الجابر الصباح عن عمر ناهز 92 عاماً في الولايات المتحدة التي وصل إليها في تموز/ يوليو من أجل الخضوع للعلاج، لينتقل العرش إلى ولي عهده الشيخ نواف البالغ 83 عاما من عمره والذي تم تنصيبه يوم 30 أيلول/سبتمبر
