On Wednesday Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed a joint defense agreement during the visit of Pakistani Prime Minister Šahbāz Šarīf to Riyadh.

The agreement “that reflects the joint commitment by both countries to enhance their security and to achieve security and safety in the region and around the world”, aims to develop the defense cooperation aspects between the two sides and to enhance the joint deterrence against any aggression. Thus according a statement issued by Šarīf’s office.

The agreement also stipulates that any aggression against any of the two states counts as an aggression against both of them.

On the other hand a high ranking Saudi official told the Reuters news agency that “the Saudi-Pakistani defense agreement is a comprehensive defense agreements that involves all military methods”.

This agreements counts to be a strengthening of the security cooperation that is long standing between Riyadh and the nuclear armed Islamabad.

وقّعت كلّ من السعودية وباكستان، اليوم الأربعاء، اتفاقية دفاع مشترك، خلال. زيارة رئيس الوزراء الباكستاني، شهباز شريف، للرياض.

وتهدف الاتفاقية، “التي تعكس الالتزام المشترك. لكلا البلدين بتعزيز أمنهما وتحقيق الأمن والسلام في المنطقة والعالم”، إلى تطوير جوانب التعاون الدفاعي بين الجانبين، وتعزيز الردع المشترك ضد. أي عدوان، وفقاً لبيان أصدره مكتب شريف.

كما تنصّ الاتفاقية أيضاً على أنّ أيّ عدوان على. أيّ من البلدين يعدّ عدواناً على كليهما.

على المقلب الآخر، صرّح مسؤول سعودي كبير لوكالة “رويترز” بأنّ “اتفاقية. الدفاع السعودية – الباكستانية هي اتفاقية دفاعية شاملة تشمل جميع الوسائل العسكرية”.
