Saudi Arabia announces the appointment of Fayṣal ibn Sa‘ūd al-Mağfal as new ambassador of the government of his country to the Syrian state after around 12 years that its embassy in Damascus had been closed.

On Sunday Saudi Arabia appointed Fayṣal ibn Sa‘ūd al-Mağfal as new ambassador of his country’s government to Syria, months after the announcement of relaunched diplomatic relations between the two countries. This is according to what the “WAS” Saudi News reported.
The agency stated that Ambassador al-Mağfal expressed “his gratitude for the royal trust”, wishing that by fulfilling his duties he will achieve the expectations of his country “in the service of the Kingdom’s interests and stabilize the bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries”.
Saudi Arabia and Syria had announced last October the reestablishment of their diplomatic missions few days after Damascus returned to the Arab League”.
The statement of the Saudi Foreign Ministry at that time said that reestablishing the works of the diplomatic mission in Damascus came “based on the brotherly ties that bring the peoples of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Syrian Arab Republic together in dedication to allow the development of the joint Arab works and to strengthen the security and stability in the region”.
May last year Syrian President Baššār al-Asad held a visit to Saudi Arabia and during that he met with Saudi Crown Prince Muḥammad ibn Salmān. During the meeting he addressed the ways to strengthen the relations between the two countries aside from discussing a number of mutually important matters and the efforts taken for that. Saudi Arabia has closed its embassy in Damascus in March 2012 to later on cut the diplomatic relations between the two Arab states for the years of the war against Syria.
The agreement to open the two embassies came after the Iranian-Saudi rapprochement that took place last year and the triple statement that was signed by the two sides under Chinese auspices.

عيّنت السعودية، اليوم الأحد، فيصل بن سعود المجفل سفيراً لحكومة البلاد لدى سوريا، بعد أشهر من إعلان استئناف العلاقات الدبلوماسية بين البلدين، وذلك وفق ما أفادت وكالة الأنباء السعودية “واس”.
وقالت الوكالة إنّ السفير المجفل أعرب عن “اعتزازه بالثقة الملكية”، متمنياً أنّ يقوم بأداء. مهام عمله بما يحقق تطلعات بلاده، “في خدمة مصالح المملكة وتوطيد أواصر العلاقات الثنائية بين البلدين الشقيقين”.
وكانت السعودية وسوريا قد أعلنتا في تشرين الأول/أكتوبر الماضي، استئناف بعثتيهما. الدبلوماسيتين بعد أيام من عودة دمشق إلى جامعة الدول العربية.
وقال بيان لوزارة الخارجية السعودية، حينها، إنّ استئناف عمل البعثة الدبلوماسية في دمشق. يأتي “انطلاقاً من روابط الأخوّة التي تجمع شعبي المملكة العربية السعودية والجمهورية العربية. السورية، وحرصاً على الإسهام في تطوير العمل العربي المشترك، وتعزيز الأمن والاستقرار في المنطقة”.
وفي أيار/مايو الماضي، أجرى الرئيس السوري بشار الأسد زيارة إلى السعودية، التقى خلالها ولي. العهد السعودي محمد بن سلمان، حيث جرى خلال اللقاء استعراض سبل تعزيز العلاقات بين البلدين، إلى جانب بحث. عدد من المسائل ذات الاهتمام المشترك والجهود المبذولة بشأنها، حسبما ذكرت وكالة الأنباء السعودية
وكانت السعودية قد أغلقت سفارتها في دمشق في آذار/مارس عام 2012، لتنقطع بعدها. العلاقات الدبلوماسية بين البلدين العربيين، طوال سنوات الحرب على سوريا.
