The presidency announced yesterday night, on Friday that former President ‘Abd al-‘Azīz Bū Taflīqa passed away at the age of 84.
Bū Taflīqa took power in 1999 in the elections held after the resignation of former president al-Yamīn Zarwāl in 1989.
The rule of Bū Taflīqa lasted for full 20 years until his resignation from his post on 2 April 2019 after the protests of the Popular Movement on 22 February the same year.
The former president suffered a not dangerous health complication on 26 February 2005 and was taken to hospital before he could leave on 31 December 2005.
In 2013 Bū Taflīqa suffered a stroke removing him from practical rulership of the state and his last appearance was the day he handed in his resignation to former president of the Constitutional Court aṭ-Ṭayb bil-‘Ayz and Speaker of the Parliament ‘Abd al-Qādir Ṣāliḥ, who with a constitutional decree took over the presidency until elections were held on 12 December 2019 on which President ‘Abd al-Mağīd Tabbūn won.
Bū Taflīqa was born on 2 March 1937 in Wağda and joined the ranks of the National Liberation Army against the French occupation at the age of 19. After the liberation he became member of the first parliament founding the state. After that under the tenure of late President Aḥmad Bin Balla he became Minister of Youth, Sports and Tourism while being at the age of 25 years.
In 1963 Bū Taflīqa became Foreign Minister and held on to this position until the death of Bū Madyān in 1978.
In 1989 Bū Taflīqa became elected to the Central Committee of the National Liberation Front until his election to the presidency in 1999 following al-Yamīn Zarwāl. He ruled the state for a full 20 years, which made him between the president the longest in office until his resignation in February 2019.

أعلنت رئاسة الجمهورية مساء الجمعة وفاة الرئيس السابق عبد العزيز بوتفليقة عن عمر ناهز 84 سنة.
تولى بوتفليقة الحكم عام 1999 في انتخابات أجريت بعد استقالة الرئيس الأسبق اليامين زروال في عام 1998.
واستمر حكم بوتفليقة 20 عاما كاملة إلى غاية استقالته من منصبه في 2 أفريل 2019 بعد مظاهرات الحراك في 22 فيفري من نفس العام.
وكان الرئيس السابق قد أصيب بوعكة صحية غير خطيرة في 26 نوفمبر 2005 ونقل للمستشفى قبل أن يغادره في 31 ديسمبر 2005.
وأصيب بوتفليقة في عام 2013 بجلطة دماغية أبعدته عن حكم البلاد فعليا، وكان آخر ظهور له يوم تقديم استقالته إلى رئيس المجلس الدستوري السابق الطيب بلعيز ورئيس مجلس الأمة عبد القادر بن صالح الذي تولى بعده رئاسة الدولة بحكم الدستور إلى غاية إجراء انتخابات رئاسية في 12 ديسمبر 2019 فاز بها الرئيس عبد المجيد تبون.
وولد عبد العزيز بوتفليقة في 2 مارس 1937 بوجدة، والتحق بصفوف جيش التحرير الوطني ضد الاحتلال الفرنسي وعمره 19 عاما، وبعد الاستقلال أصبح عضوا في أول مجلس تأسيسي وطني، وتولى بعدها في عهد الرئيس الراحل أحمد بن بلة وزارة الشباب والرياضة والسياحة وهو في سن الخامسة والعشرين.
وأصبح بوتفليقة في 1963 وزيرا للخارجية واستمر في منصبه إلى غاية وفاة بومدين في 1978.
وانتخب بوتفليقة في 1989 عضوا في اللجنة المركزية لجبهة التحرير الوطني إلى غاية انتخابه رئيسا في 1999 خلفا لليامين زروال، وقد حكم 20 عاما كاملة ما جعله أطول رؤساء الجزائر مكوثا في الحكم، إلى غاية استقالته في أفريل 2019.
