The Syrian Ministry of Oil announced on Saturday that an oil carrier in front of the Syrian coasts on the Mediterranean Sea suffered an attack by “a drone”, which caused a fire in one of its compartments.
The official Syrian press agency “SANA” said that the “fires squads took the fire under control, which caught on in one of the compartments on the oil carrier in front of the Bānyās oil terminal.
It added that “the fire caught up after the oil carrier suffered what is believed to a drone attack coming from the Lebanese regional waters”.
The Syrian Observer of Human Rights said that the blast hit an oil carrier coming from Iran, close to the oil terminal in the coastal Bānyās”.
The Observer cited a source saying that “it is unlikely that the fire was caused by a malfunction, and it is unknown whether the explosion was caused by a drone attack or a maritime attack on one of the compartments on the oil carrier”.
The Observer continued that the attack caused “fire catching up and material losses, without information on human losses”.
The incident happens in an atmosphere of escalation turmoil on maritime areas between Iran and Israel after the two states have exchanged accusations of targeting trade vessels since the beginning of March.
Iran has announced on the 7th of this month that a ship belonging to it got slightly damaged during an explosion by attacking it on the Red Sea, while press reports talked about Israel committing an operation within “response” for the previous attacks on its own ships.
In February an Israeli vessel suffered an explosion in the Gulf of Oman when it was heading from ad-Dammān in Saudi Arabia to Singapore.
The Gulf of Oman lies between Iran and the Sultanate of Oman at the exit of the strategic Straits of Hormuz, through which a large part of the global oil trade goes and its waters are guarded by ships belonging to the coalition led by the United States.
Washington accused the Iranian Revolutionary Guards of sabotaging the maritime movement at the strategic Straits of Hormuz at the Gulf in 2019, where a fifth of the global oil trade goes through daily.
Oil carriers suffered mysterious attacks in the Gulf and Red Sea regions in the last two years, and Saudi Arabia and the United States claimed the responsibility of Iran, which denied any role in these.

أعلنت وزارة النفط السورية، السبت، تعرض ناقلة نفط قبالة سواحلها على البحر المتوسط، إلى هجوم بـ”طائرة مسيرة” مما تسبب بنشوب حريق في أحد خزانتها
وقالت وكالة الأنباء السورية الرسمية “سانا” إن “فرق الإطفاء سيطرت على حريق نشب في أحد خزانات ناقلة نفط قبالة مصب النفط في بانياس
وأضافت أن “الحريق نشب بعد تعرض الناقلة لما يعتقد أنه هجوم من طائرة مسيرة قادمة من اتجاه المياه الإقليمية اللبنانية
وقال المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان، إن انفجارا ضرب ناقلة نفط قادمة من إيران، قرب مصب النفط في بانياس الساحلية
ونقل المرصد عن مصادر قولها “إن من المستبعد أن تكون الحرائق نتيجة عطل فني، ولم يعرف الانفجار ما إذا كان ناجما عن استهداف طائرة مسيرة أو استهداف بحري لأحد خزانات النفط ضمن الناقلة
وتابع المرصد أن الهجوم تسبب بـ”اندلاع النيران، وسقوط خسائر مادية، دون ورود معلومات عن خسائر بشرية
ويأتي الحادث في ظل أجواء من التوتر المتزايد في المجال البحري بين إيران وإسرائيل، بعد تبادل البلدين منذ بداية مارس الماضي، اتهامات باستهداف سفن تجارية
وأعلنت إيران في السابع من الشهر الجاري أن سفينة تابعة لها تضررت بشكل طفيف جراء انفجار استهدفها في البحر الأحمر، وسط تقارير صحافية عن ضلوع إسرائيل في العملية ضمن “رد” على استهدافات سابقة لسفن تابعة بها
وفي فبراير تعرضت سفينة إسرائيلية لانفجار داخل خليج عمان عندما كانت متوجهة من الدمام في السعودية إلى سنغافورة
ويقع خليج عمان بين إيران وسلطنة عمان عند مخرج مضيق هرمز الاستراتيجي الذي يمر عبره جزء كبير من النفط العالمي وتجوب مياهه سفن تابعة لتحالف بقيادة الولايات المتحدة
وألقت واشنطن باللوم على الحرس الثوري الإيراني في تعطيل حركة الملاحة البحرية في مضيق هرمز الاستراتيجي في الخليج العام 2019، وهو الممر الذي يعبر من خلاله خمس إنتاج النفط العالمي يوميا
وتعرضت ناقلات نفط في منطقة الخليج وفي البحر الأحمر لهجمات غامضة في العامين الماضيين، حملت السعودية والولايات المتحدة مسؤوليتها لإيران التي نفت أي دور لها فيها
