In its first visit of its kind since the fall of the previous government American congressman Cory Mills met with Syrian President Aḥmad aš-Šar‘a in Damascus discussing the conditions for lifting the sanctions and achieving “peace with Israel” amidst changes within the American policies about Syria.

According to the Bloomberg agency, American congressman Cory Mills held negotiations in Damascus with interim Syrian president Aḥmad aš-Šar‘a during which he discussed the conditions for lifting the sanctions and achieving “peace with Israel” in the first visit of its kind since the fall of the former government.

The Republican congressman from Florida, Cory Mills explained that his visit last week to Damascus that was arranged by a group of American Syrian activists and was unofficial aimed to gather information, pointing out that he plans to inform American President Donald Trump and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz about the results of his visit.

Mills said that he will deliver the message of aš-Šar‘a without revealing its content. The White House also did not issue and immediate comment.

The American politician revealed that during his meeting lasting for 90 minutes he presented to aš-Šar‘a the expectations of the United States so that the Trump administration would look into easing, or lifting the sanctions that targets any person who is dealing with the Syrian government, except proving humanitarian aid.

As for lifting the sanctions Mills pointed out that he demanded aš-Šar‘a to destroy any remaining chemical weapons, cooperate in combating terrorism and in addition show how will he deal with the foreign fighters who are still present in the country and to provide guarantees to “Israel” that does not trust the Syrian leader and opposes lifting the sanctions.

He added: “We have discussed with the Chinese Foreign Minister the American policies and their arrogant behavior, along with its control on the international scene”. He continued: “the talks were very fruitful on this matter”.

According to Mills aš-Šar‘a showed openness to discuss the American concerns, pointing out “the interest of Syria to join the Abraham Accords, in case the appropriate circumstances were available”. These agreements showed normalization of relations between Arab states and “Israel” during the first presidency of Trump.

This visit came at a time in which the American Syrian group pressures the American government in order to lift the harsh sanctions imposed on the government of the previous Syrian President Baššār al-Asad.

Syria is still listed on the American list of terrorism supporting state since 1979.

Mills described his meeting with aš-Šar‘a as positive, pointing out the importance to preserve the open dialogue to achieve stability in Syria, while also pointing out that “at one time Germany and Japan were our enemies, but we must surpass this, if we want to achieve stability in Syria”.

The interim Syrian government faces huge social and economic challenges amid growing international calls for supporting the reconstruction and solidifying stability in the country.
